Prologue: A Small, Dreamy, Beautiful Memory
“You’re familiar with light novels aren’t you, Niihama-kun?”
“Eh…?”
After school in the library. My body stiffened up when a certain someone suddenly approached me.
I could never imagine that she would approach me in this way and start a conversation with me.
She was an incredibly pretty girl.
Her face was well-proportioned, it looked like a work of art. Her skin was as white as melted milk while her smell was sweet like honey. Her long black hair seemed as soft as the finest silk thread and her eyes shone as bright as the stars. It was no wonder that your average Joe’s heart would flutter whenever they saw her.
The boys often talked about her being the most beautiful girl in school and I was in total agreement with them.
“Ah… U-uhm… T-that’s… K-kinda…?”
Communicating with a girl wasn’t something I used to, so the best thing I could do to respond to her was an incorrigible mutter. I sounded like a virgin and I hated it.
Contrary to how the girl looked, I was a dark-skinned nerd, a gloomy kid you could see everywhere.
I belong to the lowest caste possible in school and exchanging words with a princess-like existence like her made me feel like I was committing a sin that could never be forgiven.
“Oh, I knew it! I saw you reading it in the library before! I’m glad that my hunch was right!”
Despite her powerful personality, her tone was polite and her cheerfulness seemed genuine. The gap between the two made her even more attractive.
“Well, I was hoping you could help me. I’m actually looking for a certain book…”
She began to explain her problem to me, oblivious to the fact that my body went completely rigid because of my nervousness.
The girl seemed to be an avid reader. Apparently, she often looked for book recommendations online. Recently, there was a light novel that critics had been very enthusiastic about and she had been trying to find it in the school library, but…
“I don’t know which one it is because I forgot the title of the book. I thought I could look for it randomly, but the library has more light novel titles than I thought. All I know is that the book is about someone who travels to different countries on a motorcycle…” (ED: This should be Kino no Tabi, if you’re wondering)
“Ah… T-that one… Please wait a minute…”
The description gave me enough hints to work with, so I walked up to the shelves where the book was located and picked it up. It was a quite famous book, and since I’ve read plenty of light novels and manga myself, I could identify it immediately.
“I-is it this one…?”
“Ah! Yes, it is! I recognize that cover!”
The girl’s face lit up when I handed her the book.
“I can’t believe you found it so quickly! Thanks a lot!”
The pretty black-haired girl smiled at me. Even though I was just helping her look for a book, she still gave me her words of gratitude, and it was neither forced or high-handed, it made me feel touched.
Even though she’s the most beautiful girl in school… She reads light novels, huh…?
The girl in front of me liked the same thing as I did. The fact wouldn’t change anything in my life, but it still made me feel bashful.
“I bet you read a lot of light novels, right, Niihama-kun? Do you have any recommendations?”
“Eh? A-ah… Uhm… T-that’s…”
She suddenly asked me that with expectant eyes. I was flustered, not expecting that our conversation would actually continue. But still, I couldn’t just sit there and not say anything, so I racked my normally unused brain to its fullest capability, trying to come up with something to recommend her.
I managed to come up with something and immediately moved to the shelves again. Picked up some books and gave them to her as my recommendation. All based on my experience as an otaku.
“U-Uhm… I don’t normally read them, but…”
“So many! Ah, they seem to be in the same genre and all of them look really good!”
“Ah, yeah, I chose them because they are similar to the book you were looking for…”
Since she was an avid reader and seemed to be unfamiliar with light novels, I chose titles that were more beginner friendly and gave off a similar vibe to normal novels. And apparently, my decision was correct.
“Eh? You’re considering my tastes for your recommendations? T-thank you so much for your consideration! Also, I’m sorry, I made you feel uncomfortable, didn’t I?”
To my surprise, the beautiful girl bowed to me.
“I’m really grateful for everything! I’ve never really talked to you before, but you’re really kind, aren’t you?”
“…”
Her words were direct, and it felt very vivid to me.
Even for high school students, judging other people was a normal thing to do.
Ikemen and jocks were held in high regard, while gloomy nerds like me were often disregarded.
But there was no hint of that in her eyes or voice.
She thanked me with a childlike innocence, as if she hadn’t noticed my status at school or my gloominess.
“I’m glad you were here today, Niihama-kun! Thank you so much!”
In the library, enveloped by the color of the dusk, the girl smiled.
The angelic smile on her face, combined with her clear, pure heart gave my heart a huge shock. It felt like the spring breeze directly blew into my heart. Her face at that moment was engraved into my mind as a beautiful painting that would last for time immemorial.
It was a small thing, in the grand scheme of things, it could be counted as nothing.
It was nothing special to her, and she probably forgot about it soon enough.
In fact, I did not have a particularly close relationship with her after this event.
But in the gray world I lived in my youth, back when I was a gloomy, friendless nerd that was constantly egged on by those around me, this was the only moment when the light shone upon my world.
It was a dreamy, beautiful memory that I would remember no matter how much older I got.
