The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V4 Chapter 6
Volume 4 Chapter 6
Early March. After our entrance exams were over, we spent our daily lives calmly, as if we were drifting peacefully at sea.
Suzuno had been accepted to a strong kendo school and she had been showing up at the school’s kendo club. Meanwhile, I managed to pass the entrance exam for a certain metropolitan high school that I listed as my first choice.
Everything was going well.
At the graduation ceremony, Momo-chan cried and hugged Suzuno tightly. When she said, “Please stay as my friend after we graduate,” it was Suzuno’s turn to be in tears. Suzuno kept repeating “Thank you,” and “That’s my line,” back to Momo-chan.
Suzuno’s parents didn’t show up at the ceremony, but she didn’t seem to mind that.
‘Even if my parents don’t care about me, as long as I have someone else to celebrate my birthday with, it’s fine.’
I remembered the words she told me back when we were still in our second year of middle school. She was right. Family wasn’t the only thing that existed in this world. Besides, both of us had been doing well on our own for fourteen years already.
“Yuuma! Let’s stay on good terms even after our graduation!”
This was supposed to be our goodbye, but Motoyama was as lighthearted as ever.
“We’re best friends, that’s a done deal already.”
When I said those words, he burst out laughing.
“Let’s go home, Yuuma.”
My adoptive parents smiled at me warmly. They sent Suzuno a bow, it seemed like they noticed our relationship.
“Did you enjoy your middle school life?”
When my mother asked me that, I nodded firmly.
“Yes. These three years have been rough on me, but it’s the best three years of my life.”

After the graduation ceremony, I entered a period of time when I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere. I wasn’t a middle schooler anymore, but I wasn’t a high schooler either.
One day in the same season, Suzuno went out on a ‘date’ with Momo-chan. They were going to get some boba and take some pictures of Suzuno under the cherry blossom buds. It seemed to be a compromise between what Suzuno wanted and what Momo-chan wanted.
It seemed like they were keeping their words about staying friends after graduating.
Although it was too early for the cherry blossoms to bloom, the sky in Setagaya was as blue as the bottom of a swimming pool and the breeze was gentle.
Meanwhile, I was at home, trying to finish the assignments that my new school gave me.
Sometimes, Suzuno would send me pictures.
It seemed like they went all the way to Harajuku to get their bobas. Based on the pictures, they seemed to be having a good time. I wished I could go with them.
[We’re going to Komazawa Park to take more pictures.]
Three o’clock. I received another message from Suzuno.
[Today we’re going to take pictures below the sunset. I heard Momo-chan’s friends will come with us, so I’m a little nervous.]
Suzuno was still shy, but recently, she had been making more friends, so I knew that she would be fine.
Dealing with the assignments bored me, so I stretched my body lightly, sent a word of encouragement to Suzuno and fell straight onto my bed.
I decided to take a nap. Since I didn’t plan to do anything today, slacking off a little should be fine.

“Oh my.”
The shinigami’s voice echoed.
“I told you to not let your guard down, didn’t I?”
The accursed voice continued to echo.
“Our contract is still valid, you know?”
He chuckled, but his chuckle sounded like he was making a mockery to himself—
“C’mon, get up, Yuuma-kun.”
‘Aren’t you going to protect Suzuno-san?’
