The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V4 Chapter 13
Volume 4 Chapter 13
“Damm*t!”
Don’t f**k with me?! What the hell was I doing?!
“I couldn’t beat the curse! Even though I’ve decided to live with Suzuno!”
The uncontrollable frustration made me crumple to the ground.
I kept pounding on the floor, venting my anger on the sky blue train.
Suzuno’s voice echoed within me.
‘We became babies. From now on, we’ll be reborn!’
That day, I decided to tell Suzuno about everything and fight against my fate.
‘Yuuma, you need to make up your mind. It’s either both of us die or both of us live, there’s no third option.’
We chose to live together, and yet…
“Damm*t!”
I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die!
I don’t want to die and leave Suzuno behind!
Rattle rattle.
Despite my cries, the train kept on moving.
Please, make the train stop…I don’t want to go yet…
Rattle rattle.
Then, the rattling sound was covered by a muffled voice.
“You’ve really changed a lot, haven’t you?”
The shinigami was looking at me. Because of the light coming from the window, I couldn’t see his expression clearly.
“If it was seven years ago, you would gladly accept this outcome.”
He was right.
Back then, my life was worth nothing.
However, things were different now.
I was walking on a bright road, together with Suzuno.
Because of her, I was able to change.
“I don’t want to die…I don’t want to…die…”
My tears welled up.
They ran down my cheeks and spilled onto the floor, forming a puddle.
“It’s frustrating…”
I don’t want to die.
I still want to be with Suzuno.
Sorry, Suzuno…I’m really sorry…
Then, the shinigami grabbed my arm.
With an unexpectedly strong force, he pulled me up.
While sobbing, I turned my gaze at him.
“I remembered something quite nostalgic.”
He said in a quiet voice.
“Like you right now, I regretted everything after my death.”
After he died? Did that mean he was once a human like me?
When I took a closer look at his face, I noticed that he looked younger than I expected. My younger self recognized him as a middle aged man, that was a given. Whenever he appeared at my bedside, his face was engulfed in darkness, so I couldn’t see it.
Back in Kyoto, I couldn’t see his face clearly. Now that I could see it, I noticed that he was at most in his mid-twenties.
Moreover, he looked familiar. He looked like someone that I knew very well…
With an expressionless face, he said, “Mind listening to me talking about the old days?”
“Back then, like you, I had someone that I once loved with all my life. And yet, I decided to die on my own.”
“I was a wimp back then.” He said in a low voice.
“I was sick, but I was too cowardly to fight against my illness. There was no hope for recovery and I was too afraid to struggle in pain while having to fight against the fear of death. And more importantly, I was afraid that I’d eventually have to show that weakness of mine to my loved ones.”
He closed his eyes. A brief silence enveloped us.
“But, that was the wrong decision. I shouldn’t have given up. My decision to die caused my loved ones to— …I should have fought together with her…”
He laughed with a complicated expression on his face. It was hard to tell if he was mocking himself or if his laugh was genuine.
“So, when you told me you wanted to fight against your fate, to be honest, I was moved…But on the other hand, it made me feel even more regretful.”
“But why?”
“I want you to stay close to me…”
I didn’t know what he was talking about, but I could feel tears welling up in my eyes. And once again, the expression on his face bewildered me.
The shinigami whom I loathed so much was looking at me with a warm gaze.
“The reason why I told you that Suzuno-san wouldn’t live long was because I wanted you to cherish your time with her.”
Suddenly, he reached his hand out. The palm of his hand rested on my head.
“You did even more than I imagined, Yuuma-kun. Look at you, you’ve grown so big…In no time at all, you’ll grow even taller than me…”
Under that afro, he squinted his eyes.
“Are you…crying?”
He didn’t answer that question.
Then, he took his hand off my head and placed it on his chest.
“I’ll give you the last of my power.”
His hand glowed and light eventually covered whole body. His figure blurred as it disappeared into the light.
Only his voice could be heard clearly from within that light.
“Good luck to you. Your fate won’t bind you anymore. You’re on your own now.”
‘Let’s rewind the time a little bit. Just a little bit. That’s the only thing I could do for you.’
I was also swallowed by that light.
‘Now, time for you to choose a path where you two will be able to live together.’
