The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V3 Chapter 9
Volume 3 Chapter 9
The night before my school’s opening ceremony.
The shinigami appeared at my bedside.
A spring storm was raging outside. Lightning lit the room through the curtains and the roaring thunder was loud enough to shake the air.
“My, my, Yuuma-kun. I can’t believe you tried to run away from our deal.”
Like usual, I couldn’t move my body. Meanwhile the shinigami sliced me with his sharp words. He stood between the window and me. The flashing lightning became his background.
“Haven’t I told you many times over? Your sole purpose in living is to protect Suzuno-san. Do you think you can run away from your fate?”
All I could do was to move my gaze around. So, I gave him a glare.
“What’s with that look? You’re supposed to be thankful to me that I even gave you a second chance at life. Or have you forgotten that already?”
I haven’t, but…
‘Why…’
I tried to make a sound, move my limbs as hard as I could.
To vent the anger that had been welling up in my stomach.
‘Why should I keep listening to you?!’
I was still a small child back when I made a deal with him.
A helpless child, battered and tattered thanks to my mom’s treatment. Still, I yearned for her love.
But, my current self was different.
I had already become someone who could stand and think for myself.
There were people who genuinely cared for me and loved me.
My life wasn’t worthless anymore.
The thunder roared. With that as a cue, I moved my body.
‘I’m not…’
“I’m not…”
I put all my strength into my belly.
‘Your…’
“Your…”
I tore down his cowardly binding.
Finally, I was free!
“Your underling anymore!”
I moved my body. Leaping from my bed, I confronted the shinigami directly, with my eyes, staring at him like a starving beast.
“Deal this, deal that, what a load of bulls**t! I won’t let myself be tied by a promise I senselessly made back when I was a child!”
Thanks to the lightning, I couldn’t see the shinigami’s expression.
“I want to live! I want to live! I want to live!”
Like a beast that had lost all sense of reason, I released my inner desire.
I was out of breath after all that. Silence enveloped the room. One…two…three seconds. The silence felt like it would go on forever.
“Haha.”
Then a light laughter broke the silence. The shinigami laughed as his afro shook.
“You’ve really changed, Yuuma-kun…”
His words weren’t coated in anything, not mockery, nor joy. He just said it as it was.
“It’s admirable. I’m impressed that you went out of your way to defy me like this.”
I still couldn’t see his expression from where I was.
“Haha, not bad…”
His voice sounded hoarse as he said that.
“But, there is one thing I have to tell you.”
Slowly, his figure faded into the darkness.
“No matter how much you tried to struggle, our deal is still in place…”
Chill ran down my spine.
What would it be? Would Suzuno die in the end? Or would it be me who died protecting her?
“Don’t f**k with me! I won’t die! And I’ll never let Suzuno die!”
I screamed with all my strength. Things will never proceed the way he wanted. I will make sure of that.
His figure had already faded into the darkness, but at that moment, I felt our gazes met.
Then, the shinigami left me with an ominous sentence.
“Then, don’t regret your decision. Because regret is…”
The most painful thing that could happen to someone.
