The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V3 Chapter 4
Volume 3 Chapter 4
We decided that our first date would be over winter break. From just the planning alone, we could tell that our first date would be a lot of fun.
“What exactly should we do on a date?”
I tilted my head as I asked that question. Seeing that, Suzuno started to act fidgety.
“Um, I have something that I’ve been hiding from you…”
“Huh? What is it?”
What happened to her? Why was she like this? A serious talk seemed about to begin.
“Actually, I…”
I held my breath. Meanwhile Suzuno looked straight into my eyes.
“I love eating sweet things!”
“…Huh?”
My mind was blown.
“Uh, why did you feel the need to hide it? I love sweet things too, you know?”
“Because it doesn’t fit my image! Wouldn’t it be strange seeing me eating sweet things?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” I said, laughing.
“Someone who eats melonpan all the time is worried about something like that? Hahaha!”
“Melonpan might be sweet, but it’s still bread, so it doesn’t look strange if someone saw me eating it. Other kinds of sweets are no good. Just imagine seeing a scary girl eating a cake or something while grinning to herself, wouldn’t that be creepy?”
“I don’t think you’ll look creepy in that situation.”
“Only because you’re a weirdo.”
While laughing after having such exchanges, we stretched our bodies before getting off our train.
Our destination was Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest. (T/N: A real place in Midorigaoka, Tokyo. It’s like a theme park where they have various shops selling various kinds of sweets.)
Today was Christmas.
In front of the station, the street was filled with lights and many couples happily walking around while holding hands.
I still didn’t have the courage to take the hand of the girl walking beside me. We were still walking side by side at least, while keeping our usual distance.
The area around our destination was filled with sweets shops.
“You can get anything you want here, it seems.”
We haven’t even eaten yet, but Suzuno had already looked satisfied after seeing this sight while holding her cheeks with both hands.
Honestly, I didn’t really care about the sweets.
All I cared about was how cute Suzuno looked, dressed like that (white knit one-piece and short boots). Also, I couldn’t get enough of the smile she had on her face.
Not so long ago, I would’ve never thought that I would see her like this.
After all, Suzuno wasn’t the kind of person who’d smile brightly like this. More often than not, I’d find her looking depressed and beaten down.
But now, she was smiling in front of me while eating her cakes.
I found myself enjoying the sight.
Our date was so much fun.
“You’re the kind of person who’d peel the cream off the top and eat it, huh, Yuuma?”
“Huh? Is there another way of eating it?”
“Eat them together! It’s tastier that way!”
I could never get angry at her.
“Yuuma, let’s see a movie on our next date!”
“Sure. Is there a movie that you want to see?”
“No. You can decide on it.”
“Huh? Aren’t you the one who wanted to watch a movie?”
It surprised me.
Walking by her side made the dull winter sky seem brighter than usual.
The trivial conversation we had felt as precious as jewels.
Suzuno, you’re amazing.
From the first time we talked– No, even before that. I’ve always loved you. I was convinced that it was fate that made me fall in love with you.
And over time, I fell even deeper for you.
I want to protect you. I don’t want you to die.
That determination became stronger the deeper I fell for you.
And yet…
I noticed a contradicting feeling within me.
It screamed, howled from the depths of my soul, trying to force its way out.
I don’t want to die!
It urged me to claw on my chest, hold my head tightly and loudly declare to the world,
I don’t want to die yet! I don’t want to disappear from this world!
That desperate, miserable cry echoed through my heart.
