The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V3 Chapter 20
Volume 3 Chapter 20
I had told Suzuno everything.
The fate given to me by the shinigami.
What waited for us in our future; either her death or mine.
There was no third option.
But Suzuno wasn’t afraid.
“If you tell a girl, ‘You’re going to die soon,’ she’d just try to live as long as possible instead.”
On our way home from Futako-Tamagawa Park, she said that to me with a triumphant expression.
I held her hand tightly and swore to myself that I’d never let it go.
“I know. But, still, be careful.”
“I will. I don’t want to die. Of course, I don’t want you to die either, Yuuma.”
Our palms are pressing against each other. I could feel the calluses on hers, the result of her years long experience in wielding her shinai.
Once again, I realized it. The girl I fell in love with was someone who had gone through a lot, someone admirable and cool.
“I’m not going to die so easily. I’m strong and I won’t go down without a fight.”
The sunset dyed the surface of Tamagawa River orange, trying to compete with it were the bright lights coming from the various buildings in front of the station.
Around us, the world was filled with gentle colors.
Together with the crowd, we boarded the Den-en-toshi Line and the train soon traversed through the underground.
Suzuno, who was looking outside the window, had a sharp gaze in her eyes.
“Let’s do our best to survive together. If you were to die while protecting me, then I’ll follow you immediately. So, keep that in mind, okay?”
“What?! No, don’t do that!”
“If you don’t want me to do that, then, just don’t die.”
Hearing her words, I let out a groan before nodding.
While it was true that I’d do my best to reject this fate, when it came to it, I always thought that it would be better if I were the one who’d die instead of her.
“Yuuma, make up your mind. We can live together or die together. Those are our only options.”
“Die together or…live together?”
I realized that the burden I had been carrying had changed its weight.
This was troubling.
How could she be this cool?
She easily changed the rule that was bound to my very life.
I always wanted to be her hero.
So frustrating. The situation was reversed; she was my hero now.
“Anyway, since that shinigami told you to protect me with your life, we can assume that the cause of my death isn’t illness.”
We got off at the Yoga Station. Ascending to the ground level, we walked up the mortar-shaped station square.
“If my cause of death is illness, then, there’s no way that you’ll be able to save me, Yuuma. I was thinking of going to a hospital for a cancer checkup, but that seems to be unnecessary.”
“You were thinking that far ahead?”
“Of course. Anyway, since illness is out of the way, the cause of my death would be either an accident, a disaster…or murder… The latter is more than possible, I picked a fight with a lot of people.”
This was getting pretty disturbing quickly.
A middle schooler was speculating about her cause of death. If it wasn’t disturbing, I didn’t know what was.
“I knew it, I need to train myself so I can protect you no matter what happens.”
“Wrong. Train yourself to protect me and yourself.”
Right. The rule had changed.
“From now on, I’ll keep carrying my shinai. With a weapon in my hands, I’m confident I can beat anyone.”
“I understand what you’re trying to do, but that’ll only make you seem suspicious, so please don’t do that.”
Ahh, talking with her was so enjoyable.
Nothing had really changed, but just being able to talk about the future with her already made me feel optimistic about everything.

As morbid as it is, I would rather prefer they go down together.
