The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V3 Chapter 14
Volume 3 Chapter 14
Walking in the rain felt good.
I steadily climbed through the vermilion tunnel, wondering when I would reach the top. No, I actually couldn’t care less about that. I just wanted to ascend these stairs without thinking about anything else.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and light shone from behind the torii gates. Something was coming at me.
“So, what are you doing?”
My eyes widened. I didn’t expect it to talk to me. Not to mention that its voice was familiar.
I passed through the torii gates, broke through the light and saw a figure descending from the top of the mountain. Long limbs, loose shirt and an afro that caught my eyes.
“Shinigami…”
“Jeez, this is a sacred area. What are you doing here, Yuuma-kun?”
This guy manifested himself in real life? Not to mention, he followed me to Kyoto?
The last time I confronted him was on the morning of the opening ceremony of my third year of middle school. Like usual, he visited me in my dream. I thought I made sure that I cut ties with him back then.
But, he still chased me all the way here? …I guess I really couldn’t escape from his control.
“What? Are you here to take me with you?”
“Hahaha.”
His afro shook heartily.
“You’re so wary of me, haha! Don’t worry, this is a sacred place. Any evil intention I might have will be cleansed in a heartbeat!”
There were three sets of stairs between me and him. I looked up at his face, which looked cleaner than ever.
The shinigami sat down. “Why don’t you sit down with me?” he beckoned. Reluctantly, I complied and sat down next to him. I was tired from walking. Might as well do this for a while.
An unnatural space between us was formed even though we sat side by side. Then, he turned to look at me with a serious expression.
“That’s a hell of a face you got there.”
“What?”
That was vexing. Someone who probably came from hell was telling me such a thing.
“You’ve been wearing that kind of face all day long during the school trip. Actually, you’ve been doing it since before that. No one is going to talk to you if you keep this up, you know?”
“…What do you know?”
“You should be thankful to Motoyama-san. If it isn’t because of him, everyone would have isolated you by now.”
Hearing the name I wanted to hear the least come out of his mouth made me involuntarily twist my mouth.
“Jeez, you’re making that face again.”
“I don’t care even if I’ll end up being alone… I don’t need anyone’s company anymore.”
My whole purpose of living was to protect Suzuno. But it was clear that she didn’t need me anymore.
“Even if I don’t save her, Motoyama will do the job for me.”
The shinigami shook his shoulders exaggeratedly.
“Seriously, you… In the first place, what started all this?”
“…What do you mean?”
“Why did the relationship between you and Suzuno-san turn awkward like this?”
No words escaped my mouth. My thoughts stopped midway. No, I stopped it as I didn’t want to think about it.
As I turned my gaze away, the shinigami gave me a sharp blow.
“This is all because you’ve been avoiding Suzuno-san.”
“T-That’s…”
“You are afraid to die from protecting her. That’s why you distanced yourself from her. And that’s also why you decided to turn against me.”
Yes, his words were correct.
“And now you’re sulking because you realized that another guy is going to replace you.”
“!”
Right. I was avoiding Suzuno because I was afraid of dying. But before I realized it, my fear was replaced by my selfish anger toward her and Motoyama. This…
“Let me say this clearly to you.”
The shinigami stretched his arm and flicked the tip of my nose with his index finger.
“The feeling that currently torments you…It has a name. It’s called jealousy.”
My cheeks turned red.
“What a cute little thing, our Yuuma-kun is. It suits you.”
F**k.
I held my head.
So frustrating! Why was this kind of b*stard the one who managed to figure me out?
“Hahaha!”
I heard that familiar, unpleasant laugh. No matter how much time I heard it, it still felt unpleasant to my ears.
“What a cute guy you are! Hahaha! I can’t believe your jealousy outweighs your fear of death!”
I couldn’t say anything back to him. I wasn’t being bound by him, but I couldn’t raise my head.
This guy was right, after all.
“Well, it isn’t like I don’t understand. Jealousy isn’t something that could be driven away that easily.”
My head was in a mess and I forgot what was important to me.
“But, seriously, you’re so cute, Yuuma-kun. To the point that I, the personification of death myself, can’t help but mess with you.”
I could feel him grinning at me.
“Whoops, she’s here.”
‘…Ma! Yuuma!’
“Well, it’s time to face your feelings properly. Your destiny is slowly starting to catch up with you, you know?”
‘Yuuma!’
The shinigami’s voice melted into the void.
“Let us meet again… At the destined time…”
