“You got good grades, but why are you so stupid, Yamaoka-kun?”

“Huh?”

What did she mean by that? I just wanted to protect her.

“If you want to know which school I’ll be going to, just ask me. You don’t need to sneak around like that!”

“Ah, right, sorry…”

“I’ll answer your questions, whatever they are. You know this, don’t you?”

I see. I could just ask her instead of stalking her, huh? 

Suddenly, a strong wind blew past us. It messed up her braided hair a little.

“Yamaoka-kun…”

With a stiff-looking face, she stared at me.

Looking at that expression of hers made me feel a little awkward.

“What do you think of me?”

“Yes?”

Red leaves, carried by the wind, fell down in front of us.

“What do I think of you?”

Ignoring the falling leaves, I answered her question with my own.

“Yes. You are always trying to stay by my side, affirming my existence, taking care of me… You went out your way to celebrate my birthday… Are we really just friends?”

She crossed her fingers in front of her chest.

I could see her fingertips trembling.

“Of course, I’m fine with us being friends. Honestly, it’s more than I deserved…”

“But, you know, you got my hopes up a little.” She looked up to me.

“You kept giving me those kinds of signs, Yamaoka-kun. Trying to go to the same school as me… Calling our meeting as ‘fate’… Exaggerating a lot of things about me…”

“Everything I said is true…”

I only set my eyes on her.

I fell in love with her at first sight.

My feelings toward her had never changed.

What should I do?

My heart started to ache. The feelings that I had been trying so hard to suppress are now starting to overflow.

“…I always thought that my feelings were one-sided.”

“You’re awful, do you know that? Have you ever taken the time to stop and think about my feelings for a second?”

Suzuno’s feelings…

My heart started to race. It’s not good. I can’t take this anymore.

I thought that I would be content by just staring at her from a distance. Like a beautiful jewel, I’d only reach out to protect her if she was about to break.

But, after she stared at me with those eyes…

Our gazes collided.

Her fingertips were trembling. The unusual, elegant-looking dress couldn’t hide her anxiety.

If I were to take a step closer to her.

I wouldn’t be able to turn back from where I came.

We were only three steps away from each other. If I reached out my hand, I’d be able to touch her trembling fingertips.

“Honestly, I really don’t know what you are feeling about me.”

I looked straight into her eyes.

“All I know is that my feelings had never changed from the moment I laid my eyes on you.”

I could see her holding her breath.

Meanwhile, I tried to regulate mine.

“I always loved you, Natsuhara Suzuno-san. Will you go out with me?”

She pursed her lips tightly. Tears started coming out of her eyes. Using her hands, she tried to hide it from me.

Then, while beaming, she looked up at me.

“I’m so happy… Thank you…”

With tears, she continued.

“I love you too, Yamaoka-kun.”
