We were planning to take pictures together, but there was no way that we wouldn’t get noticed walking around the school while Suzuno was wearing such an eye-catching dress.

And so, we moved to the backyard. This was the place where Suzuno ate her lunch by herself back in the sports festival.

Back then, the trees were filled with lush greenery, but now the same trees had started to be dyed in orange color.

“That girl… Momo-chan is quite a talkative one…”

“I know, right? There’s something wrong with her head. For some reason, she’d always stare at me from a distance. She told me she did it while trying to figure out what kind of dress, makeup or hairstyle would look good on me…”

It felt like that girl treated Suzuno like a diamond in the rough and tried to polish her. I guess Suzuno’s beauty could draw in girls too.

“I’m glad that you have someone you can talk to in your class now.”

Her cheeks loosened as she nodded.

“I had a great time. Since I had to perform, there were people that I could talk with…”

“I see.”

“This is all thanks to the good luck charm Yamaoka-kun gave me. Whenever I wear it on my bag, it gives me enough courage to talk with other people in my class.”

“Amazing. I didn’t know that melonpan could do that.”

After a series of giggles, silence came upon us.

It was the first time that I felt awkward being alone with her.

“…They called you my boyfriend, Yamaoka-kun.”

“Yeah. I feel bad that you had to be paired with such an ugly guy like me.”

Suzuno laughed at my words. I wasn’t joking, though. I meant what I said.

“You’re so pretty… You should become an actress in the future.”

“Sure, sure. Why do you love to flatter me like that?”

I meant what I said, though.

Didn’t she realize that everyone’s eyes were on her whenever she was up on the stage?

She was definitely different from everyone else.

I wasn’t the only one who thought so.

That fact made me frustrated.

“The future, huh?”

Suzuno leaned her back against the three. The movements of her hair and eyelashes made my heart race. Looking at her red lips made me feel guilty somehow.

“Yamaoka-kun, after this festival is over, we need to study for the entrance exam.”

“Right, the teachers told us that, didn’t they? ‘The exam is coming up close’ and whatnot.”

“I know, right? We’re still halfway through our second year; we have time!”

It had only been a year and a half since I entered middle school. Eighteen months since I met Suzuno. But, in that short time, she managed to capture my heart completely.

“By the way, Yamaoka-kun, what are you going to do? I bet you’re going to an elite school.”

The atmosphere stung. It was the first time that someone ever asked me that question.

“…What about you, Suzuno? You’re trying to enter high school through a recommendation, right?”

“If possible, yes… I want to continue doing kendo in high school.”

“I see.”

There was no way that she’d ever put down her shinai. She was a promising young athlete. Also, kendo was the only connection that she had with her parents.

“So, are you going to the Setagaya All-Girls High, or Shibuya All-Girls High?”

She looked at me in surprise.

“Huh? How did you?”

“Am I not your number one stalker? I looked up high schools with a strong kendo team in it.”

They just happened to be all-girls schools.

Meanwhile for me, since I would be dying soon, I failed to see the need for me to look for a high school to go to.

My mission was to protect Suzuno. Ideally, it would be better for me to go to the same school as her, that was why I tried to look up the school that she’d try to go to instead.

She managed to live this long, but who knows when death would come knocking at her doorsteps. That was why I couldn’t just let my guard down.

I wanted to stay beside her and protect her.

But…

“If it’s an all-girls school, I can’t go there with you…”

I said those words while sighing. Suzuno’s face turned red almost immediately.
