June was finally over. Summer arrived, accompanied by the sound of the cicadas. It was the final exam season. Suzuno had recovered to her usual state.

An overly realistic-looking melonpan keychain was hanging from her bag.

“I didn’t expect you to place the keychain out in the open like that… Isn’t it embarrassing?”

“Huh? What are you on about? You were the one who picked this gift for me, have some confidence!”

My question of concern was met with a snarky comment from her. Now, that was the Suzuno I knew.

By the way, she really was an amazing girl.

Despite her state last month, she hadn’t missed a single day of school. She also never came to school late. I couldn’t help but admire her mental fortitude.

By the way, this summer, despite being a second year in middle school, she entered a big kendo tournament in Budokan and topped it. I knew this because I watched her matches from the stands.

After the awards ceremony was over, a man in black suit approached her. It seemed like he was someone that was introduced to her by Arasaka-sensei.

When the man gave Suzuno his business card, she had a more nervous face than back when she was fighting her matches. That was when it struck me.

That person was probably someone from a notable high school. Because of her talent in kendo, he was trying to scout her.

By purely using her skill, she already qualified to enter a notable high school.

Sitting in the sparsely populated stand, I thought to myself.

‘What about me?’

What should I do in the future? My parents wished for me to continue my education to the college, so for the time being, I was following their wishes.

But, where should I go? Do I have the reason to go to high school in the first place?

The voice of the cicadas accompanied me as I left Budokan, along with the scorching heat of the sun.

Even the suffocating rainy season passed by in a flash. The summer would probably end in the same way.

It was probably time to think of my future after I graduated.

Before I knew it, a whole new path appeared in front of me.

Though I didn’t know whether I could bring myself to walk in that path or not.
