The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V2 Chapter 16
Volume 2 Chapter 16
I took out a small bag from inside my school bag.
“Natsuhara Suzuno-san.”
With the same grandeur as giving out an award, I held out the bag in Suzuno’s direction.
Seeing the bag wrapped in a red ribbon, Suzuno was dumbfounded.
“Happy birthday, Natsuhara Suzuno-san.”
“Eh?”
“Your birthday is in June, right? That’s why I thought of celebrating it by giving you a gift. It isn’t anything special though…”
I handed the bag to the confused looking Suzuno.
“Happy fourteenth birthday.”
Thank you for being born, for living this long, for surviving long enough to meet me. Your existence was the source of my happiness.
“Yamaoka-kun?”
Once again, tears started to run down on her cheeks.
“Why are you so nice to me?”
With a hoarse voice, Suzuno told me the reason why she hated June, her own birthday. It was the fact that no one ever celebrated it with her. It made her wonder why she was born in the first place.
“This is the first time I’ve ever received a present… Can I open it?”
I told her to go ahead and do it. She then proceeded to carefully unwrap the package.
Something rolled out from the small package into her hand. Suzuno looked at it for a moment without saying anything.
Then she burst out laughing.
“What the hell? Hahaha! Where did you get this?”
“I thought you liked it, so I bought it for you…”
“No no, I do like it, it’s just… Hahaha!”
Suzuno, who was laughing uncontrollably, was holding a tiny keychain. It was a realistic-looking melonpan keychain.
“Hehe, it’s so soft to the touch…”
“Glad that you like it.”
Her reaction was different than I expected. I thought she would be pleased, but she was amused by it instead. Well, as long as she was happy.
Yes, as long as she was happy.
After this small celebration, we went home. I had to get Suzuno home before night arrived. Who knows what kind of danger that might be lurking in the darkness.
When we parted, she stopped me from leaving and said,
“Thank you for today, Yamaoka-kun. I’ll treasure your gift forever.”
She held up the small melonpan while smiling.
“Mm. Think of it as a good luck charm, I guess.”
“Good luck charm, huh?”
Then, she rubbed her cheek against the keychain.
Her smile melted away all the worries that I had. It was a pretty looking smile, the prettiest I had ever seen.
“Yamaoka-kun.”
She wrapped her hands around the small keychain before continuing,
“I always thought that my parents didn’t love me because I’m a bad girl.”
The phrase ‘bad girl’ made my heart ache.
She had the same thought as I did back when my real mom tried to kill me.
“But, who cares about that. Even if my parents refuse to take care of me, as long as there’s someone who would celebrate my birthday with me, that’s enough for me.”
“That’s right… Parents aren’t everything there is to it in this world.”
My heart felt full.
Suzuno was saying those words for herself, but those words also brought comfort to me.
It didn’t matter. Even if my own mother tried to kill me because I didn’t deserve to live, that didn’t change the fact that I was still alive.
Suzuno laughed again.
I tried to respond to her by showing her my own smile, but I stopped myself. I’d end up crying if I were to actually do that.
So, I just bid her farewell and watched over her as she entered her house. Before she went inside, she waved to me and I waved back.
Come to think of it, today’s sunset looked beautiful. They say that if you could see the sunset, then the next day would be a sunny day.
I guess this was a sign that the rainy season would end soon.

I feel conflicted. This is a very happy moment for the two but just makes it all the harder when the “bad end” comes.
