The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V2 Chapter 14
Volume 2 Chapter 14
It was one day in June, in the middle of the rainy season. The day of the parent-teacher conference.
In our school, the conference was held every June. This year, both my parents came for the event.
Dad said that I need to consider my future seriously since I’d be in my second year soon.
Mom said in jest, “If we don’t keep an eye on Yuuma, he probably won’t go to high school altogether.” Though, I had a suspicion that she was being dead serious.
During the meeting, Arasaka-sensei told my parents about my school life. Most of them were trivial stuff, like how I usually helped my classmates with their studies. My parents were mostly delighted after hearing his words. I kinda disagreed with one of his words though. The fact that he said that Motoyama was a good friend of mine. He was just hanging around me on his own.
The meeting ended quickly without a hitch. Arasaka-sensei’s closing words were him giving me praises for having good grades and telling my parents to help me find a good high school for me to go to.
Overall, nothing really happened.
After saying our goodbyes to Arasaka-sensei, my parents and I left the room and went to the hallway together. In the hallway, there were chairs lined up where parents and their children waited for their turn to come.
I saw Suzuno sitting next to her classroom’s door. Her gaze was downcast, probably trying not to make any eye contact with anyone.
Next to her was a woman, fiddling with her phone.
My eyes glued to that woman.
Her hair, trimmed perfectly at shoulder-length, shook every time she made a movement.
Her shoulder lines, long legs and thin fingertips.
Everything looked exactly like Suzuno’s.
I see. That was Suzuno’s mother, huh? The woman who neglected her.
June was the month for the parent-teacher conference.
The reason why Suzuno’s mood deteriorated was probably related to this event.
Mom looked into my pace, curious as to why I was standing still.
“…Um, I want to talk with my friend. Dad, mom, you can go home first.”
When I told them that, they happily obliged. (It seemed like dad was happy to find out that I had friends at school.)
After seeing my parents off, I boldly approached Suzuno and her mother.
As I got closer, I could hear her mother’s voice.
“Is it still not your turn yet, Suzuno?”
Her voice was filled with exasperation. She busily tapped her phone and the floor with her fingers and foot, respectively.
“Um… It should be in thirty minutes…”
“I still have to wait? I can’t believe this. I’m busy, I don’t have the time to be here!”
“…Sorry.”
Her cold tone was directed to the absent-minded Suzuno.
I see. So, she always had to deal with this kind of treatment.
Just bringing her mother here must have been quite an ordeal for her.
“Um.”
I called out to both of them.
They both looked at me. Seeing how their faces exactly looked like each other made me once again realize that they really were blood-related.
“Are you Suzuno-san’s mother? I’m her friend, my name is Yamaoka Yuuma.”
“Yes?”
The woman furrowed her brows lightly.
At her side, Suzuno shook her head weakly. She seemed to be telling me to not do anything unnecessary.
“I’m always indebted to Suzuno-san, so I thought that I should say hello to you, um…”
I had a lot of things to say to this woman.
‘Take better care of Suzuno.’ ‘You’re horrible, how can’t you see that your daughter is hurting?’ And so on.
But, a middle schooler like me wasn’t qualified to say those things.
So I bowed my head deeply.
“Thank you for giving birth to Suzuno-san.”
This was all I could say as a middle schooler.
When I looked up, the woman’s expression froze.
Our eyes met. I noticed her lifted nose and narrow eyes. Suzuno inherited a lot of her looks from her mother.
She was the person who hurt the girl that I held dear.
Without her, I would never have met Suzuno in the first place.
“Once again, thank you very much.”
When I thanked her again, there was an indescribable look on the woman’s face. She clearly didn’t understand what she was witnessing. Her gaze toward me was filled with both disgust and fear.
“…You’re still a middle schooler, but you already say weird things like this. Suzuno, you need to make a better friend.”
With a sigh, she turned her gaze away from me.
“Don’t involve yourself with a stupid guy like him. If you were to have a child with him, it’d be a disaster.”
“!”
She really went out of her way to say s**t like that in front of her own daughter’s face. I almost cussed at her, but I managed to swallow it back.
However, Suzuno, who had been keeping her mouth shut, stood up and confronted her.
“…Mother!”
The chair she sat on made a rattling sound.
“Say whatever you want to say about me, but don’t you dare say anything bad about Yamaoka-kun!”
Suzuno’s voice echoed in the quiet hallway.
Seeing her daughter acting like that, the woman stared at her with wide eyes. Realizing that she accidentally spoke that out loud, Suzuno froze in her tracks.
Then there was silence.
I couldn’t do anything but watch as their gazes collided.
Then, the silence was broken by a lethargic voice.
“What? Suzuno, are you trying to go against me now? You’re such a pain in the a**.”
The woman then stood up.
“I’m going back. Deal with the meeting yourself.”
Without saying another word, she turned her back on us and left. Not even once did she turn around to see us before she eventually moved out of our sights.
