What awaited me in Setagaya was a whole new life.
From the countryside of northern Kanto to a residential area in a big city.
From a shabby apartment with only two rooms to a big house.
The Yamaokas were by no means millionaires, but my mom and I couldn’t compare with their wealth.
They had two children.
One was an older boy who was in his sixth grade of grade school and the other one was a younger girl who was still in pre-school.
The older boy, Kento, was busy with his middle school entrance exam, so he didn’t have the time to pay any attention to me. He treated me like air, basically.
The younger girl, Anna, was five years old.
She wasn’t young enough to not notice the change in her surroundings, but she wasn’t mature enough to hide what she was thinking.
“Why doesn’t this boy go back to his own house?”
At night, when our futons were already lined up on the tatami mats, Anna repeatedly asked her mother. She probably knew that I’d be staying here from now on, but she asked anyway.
“Yuuma will be our family from now on. He will be your big brother.”
“That’s weird. Up until yesterday, I only had one big brother. Did you pick him off from somewhere, Mom?”
Hearing that, Aunt Yamaoka scolded her. Nevertheless, Anna still couldn’t get used to my existence.
Honestly, her words didn’t hurt me at all. In fact, I was thankful for her, it was great that she was trying to get rid of me.
Because, even though Aunt Yamaoka was kind to me, she wasn’t my mom.
My mom was someone who’d yell at me and hit me everyday. I couldn’t forget about her.
