The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V1 Chapter 26
Volume 1 Chapter 26
The dining room of the Yamaokas was unusually quiet. I was sitting there with my back hunched.
Aunt Yamaoka was standing in front of me. She gave me a grim look while keeping her mouth shut.
Ah, I f**ked up, didn’t I?
I had been trying to live my life as quietly as possible so the Yamaokas wouldn’t be troubled by my presence.
When I thought back to my past actions, I broke out in a cold sweat.
From an outsider’s perspective, I suddenly ran away without carrying anything from the house, and without telling anyone. It was right to call it a runaway case.
Back then, I was so occupied with Suzuno to the point that I couldn’t think about anything else. I shoulda left a note or something before I left.
I heard the front door being opened. Then, Uncle Yamaoka entered the dining room.
His face, half buried in his scarf, was red as if it was frostbitten.
“Um…”
Since I owed him an apology, I stood up.
“Sorry, I was in a hurry, so I left the house without saying anything.”
He furrowed his brows, but he remained silent.
Was he angry? Frustrated? I couldn’t tell.
“Um…sorry. I troubled everyone, didn’t I? I promise I won’t do this ever again…”
As I was making that promise, my words were cut by a roar.
“What the hell are you talking about?!”
Uncle Yamaoka yelled at me.
In the five years that I stayed with the Yamaokas, it was the first time that he showed his anger toward me.
Well, it was to be expected. I troubled him so much, it was normal for him to be mad at me. Since the police got involved, the neighbors would definitely make a fuss about it later.
Even though I was already troubling them by existing, I just had to go out of my way and do this.
I guess I’ll be kicked out of the house soon, huh?
Those thoughts came to my mind and I could feel tears starting to form in my eyes. Pathetic.
“Yuuma, listen to me.”
Uncle Yamaoka, still wearing his coat, sat down on the chair and gestured to me to sit down as well. His eyes were burning in anger.
“Yuuma, what you did just now didn’t trouble us. We didn’t feel troubled, but we felt worried about you.”
“…Huh?”
The unexpected words made me widen my eyes.
Next to him, Aunt Yamaoka nodded her head.
“…Worried?”
“Yes.” Aunt Yamaoka leaned forward.
“You ran outside without saying anything for hours in such cold weather! I was so nervous! I thought you got into an accident or were freezing out there!”
“Eh?”
I was so surprised that the words that I wanted to say to them failed to come out of my mouth.
“Aunt, you were worried about me?”
“Of course!”
At Aunt Yamaoka’s words, Uncle Yamaoka nodded his head. The rage in his face had been replaced by frustration.
“Yuuma, we’re worried about you, so please, you need to treat yourself better. If this kind of thing happens again, I don’t think we can keep our minds together.”
Huh?
It felt like I was being struck by thunder.
Those words…I just told Natsuhara— no, Suzuno, the same thing, didn’t I?
‘Natsuhara-san, you need to treat yourself better. If this kind of thing happens again, I’ll go insane, you know?’
I was worried about Suzuno so badly.
That was why I stormed out of the house.
When I saw her sleeping under that kind of cold, I yelled at her.
Because I was worried about her.
What would I do if something happened to her?
The Yamaoka couple probably felt the same way as me.
“Worried…about me?”
Suddenly, my tears began to spill.
I didn’t know that…
In front of me, Uncle Yamaoka let out a troubled smile.
Aunt Yamaoka offered me a handkerchief.
His smile, her gesture. Both looked so unfamiliar to me.
They came to me like warm tea that warmed my body on a cold night…
My tears couldn’t stop coming out.
…I never knew that I was so important to them.
