I entered a restaurant in a hurry and ordered a meal and a drink that caught my eye in the drink bar. When I gave her a cup of tea, Natsuhara-san gingerly wrapped her cold hands around the cup.

“So warm…”

“It’ll feel warmer if you drink the whole thing.”

After she took a few sips, color gradually returned to her cheeks and lips. Seeing that, I patted my chest in relief.

If anything were to happen to her, I don’t think I can stand it…

“How long were you waiting outside?”

“Um…it’s half past nine now, so about three hours…?”

Unbelievable. Three hours in that kind of state? She was still wearing her uniform too…

“Anyway, why do you keep asking me questions, Yamaoka-kun?”

She shot me with a glare.

The usual Natsuhara-san is back. Thank God.

“Why did you show up suddenly like that? With that kind of outfit too.”

“Huh?! Oh, s**t! I’m still in my loungewear!”

I was wearing a thick cardigan that stretched to the bottom. Both my top and bottom wear were dyed in gray. They looked lame. 

“I was studying in my room, then I saw the black cat— Oh, right! The black cat!”

“…I don’t understand what you are trying to tell me, Yamaoka-kun.”

She giggled and told me to explain everything slowly. I could kill for that smile.

“Uh, let’s see…remember the black cat that hangs out in the park sometimes? It brought me here.”

When I explained everything to her, she stared at me with her mouth wide open.

“What? Kuro-chan brought you here? How is that even possible?”

“Don’t ask me…”

Still, that was how it really went. If that black cat didn’t scratch the window and took me out of my room, I would still be studying leisurely right now.

“Thank God I came just in time.”

When I said that, Natsuhara-san suddenly froze for a moment.

“…Stop overreacting.”

“I’m not. Natsuhara-san, you need to treat yourself better. If this kind of thing happens again, I’ll go insane, you know?”

She didn’t know that her lifespan was short.

She then lowered her eyelids.

“I don’t mind situations like this, you know. Also, you don’t need to help me everytime this happens, Yamaoka-kun.”

“Even so, I want to help you.”

Because that was my fate.

I came back crawling from the land of the dead to protect you, Natsuhara-san.

“…”

She raised her head. I noticed tears forming in her eyes.

“You’re such a weirdo, Yamaoka-kun.”

“I know.”

“Even back when we first met, you rambled about things like fate. You even told me that you’ve been looking for me or something…”

“I did, yeah.”

I remembered everything that happened that day. The sunny morning when I first made contact with my fated girl.

“…I’ll say it now. I’ve known you since before you talked to me back then.”
“Huh?!”

I looked at her face in surprise. The steam coming from her tea blocked my view of her face.

“‘The pitiful boy with no parents.’”

“I heard those rumors about you the day after the entrance ceremony,” she said with a blunt tone.

“So, I secretly watched you from afar. But, you didn’t look pitiful at all. You were friendly and kind, you got along well with your friends…”

She let out a deep sigh.

“And so, you turned into an eyesore. Even without your parents, you managed to have a proper school life. Your existence became a curse that haunted my days.”

Her words shocked me. It felt like I received a slap in my face.

In my case, I fell in love with her when I saw her at the entrance ceremony.

Since then I spent my days yearning for her.

Yet, I somehow became a curse for her. What went wrong?

“Yamaoka-kun, let’s go home. I should be able to get in the house now…”
