The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - V1 Chapter 15
Volume 1 Chapter 15
“You’re surprisingly smart, Yamaoka-kun.”
While eating her breakfast in the park, a melonpan, Natsuhara-san stared at me with a serious-looking gaze.
It became a routine for us to eat breakfast together here. Well, it was a routine for her, I just barged in uninvited.
Just yesterday, the result for the mid-term exam was posted on the school board. At our school, they posted the names of the top thirty students without exception. Since I ranked twenty-eight, my name was there too. I didn’t plan to stand out, but oh well. Anyway, it seemed like she noticed my name.
It was surprising that she did. I thought she had no interest in other people.
“You don’t look like the type to study.”
I knew right?
“In my term, I call it gap moe. By the way, can you show me yours too?”
“…Die.”
“Eh?! I can’t just die here, though!”
“Of course you can’t. Stop taking my words seriously.”
She got mad at me again.
Honestly, I was more fit to be an idiot than a smart person.
“Well, actually, I’m not that smart at all. I just have a lot of free time because I didn’t join any club. I spend all my free time studying instead.”
Compared to other students, I just had more free time. Also, since my stepsister was moody lately because she was about to take her middle school entrance exams, I tried not to go back home quickly.
After school, I just went to the library to read either the books there or my own notes until closing time.
“You’re studying because you have a lot of free time? What about your friends? You don’t hang out with them? You could also just play games or stuff, you know?”
“My friends are either busy with their clubs or in cram school. I don’t care about games, so I don’t play any of them.”
As we were talking like this, she finished her melonpan. Today she was eating maple melonpan, while yesterday she was eating chocolate chip melonpan. By hanging out with her, I found out that there were many variants of melonpan in this world.
Like she said, she ate her breakfast in this park and the food was always the same, a melonpan and some milk.
Why doesn’t she eat at her home, I wonder?
I had been wondering about that for a while now.
It wasn’t like she was an adult or anything. She was a seventh-grader, like me.
Even though her mouth was foul, she was earnest and strict to herself.
Seeing her eating her breakfast on her own in a place like this really felt out of place.
Come to think of it, she was alone in the entrance ceremony.
Even though I, an orphan, was accompanied by my guardians, the Yamaoka couple.
I felt a tinge of pain in my chest.
Is she similar to me?
Alone, without our parents.
“What are you doing, Yamaoka-kun? You’re going to be late if you dawdle.”
Her gaze dragged me back to reality.
“Sorry, my imagination ran wild because of the melonpan.”
“That’s scary…anyway, you should go quickly. Don’t be late.”
Before you ask, we couldn’t just go to school together, or else more bad rumors about her would start. ‘Natsuhara Suzuno blackmailed a gloomy guy,’ or something like that. Hence why we would go on our separate ways here.
I waved her goodbye and she pedaled her bike lightly toward the road. Before long, her back disappeared from my sight.
“What an earnest girl.”
Despite the bad rumors about her, she was always punctual and never late.
“A sweet one too.”
Her gentle side was hidden behind her blunt tone. If she didn’t care about me, she would just go away without telling me anything.
I felt the muscles in my cheeks start to relax. If I didn’t hold my lips together, I would probably find myself smiling like a fool.
It was already June.
The air felt humid and my sleeves stuck to my arms because of the sweat.
But it didn’t feel bad.
After all, summer will come soon.
The first summer after I got to know her.
I knew that I’d die for her someday.
Until then, please let me cherish this moment with her, Shinigami-san.
