The long night gave us time to talk as much as we wanted.

When I finished my story, Suzuno let out a deep breath.

“I…don’t like it. Hearing you dying made my heart almost stop.”

“Well, me too. I was so frustrated, I wanted to die. Well, I did die, but you know what I mean.”

“That’s not funny.” Suzuno scowled at me. Even though it was the funniest joke I told so far, how rude.

“Anyway, does that mean we’ll be fine now?”

She asked timidly.

“Your fate of dying to save me. Is it all over now?”

“Yes, it’s all over. The shinigami said that our fate will no longer bind us. Everything is up to us now.”

“I see.” Suzuno said as she turned her gaze upward, letting out a deep breath as she did so.

Yes, the gentle ‘curse’ the afro shinigami placed on me had ended.

“You know, maybe that afro shinigami was…”

I nodded in response to her words.

“Yeah, he was my real dad. Guess he wasn’t a real shinigami.”

Looking back, it was my younger self who made an assumption that he was a shinigami.

“I’ve talked to him several times since I was a child. Since the moment I almost died.”

That was the turning point of my life that led me to Suzuno. And he was there, watching me in my daily life.

I guess that was the reason why sometimes it felt like someone was watching over me.

“He probably watched over me all this time.”

“He was a great father…”

She smiled at me, but I shook my head.

“No, on the contrary, he was the worst. Like, whenever I was happy because of you, he’d come to my bedside and say something like ‘Come over to me quickly.’ No wonder I kept treating him as if he’s a shinigami, he’s acting like that.”

Suzuno raised her eyebrows.

“I was so mad at him. There was one time when I told him ‘Why the hell should I do what you said?’”

Now that I think about it, everything felt so funny to me. Essentially, I was just rebelling against my father.

I might have never met him when he was alive, but he was still my father.

The father that guided me through my life and the one that I tried to overcome.

“I hope that he can be reunited with my real mom someday…”

My real mother, the one who gave birth to me and abused me.

‘I was so scared of you.’

Even now I was still worried that she’d come out of nowhere and drag me to go with her to a loveless world.

No matter how much time passed, I doubt that I could ever forgive her for what she had done to me.

That was why, I hope she could reunite with my real father soon.

As I knew that clumsy and strange man could make her happy.

The stars twinkled, their lights grew brighter as the night gotten deeper.

Silence ensued for a while.

It was Suzuno who broke that silence.

“Yuuma. Thank you for saving me that day. You even risked your life to save me…I can’t thank you enough…”

She gave me a strong look and I nodded.

“I trained everyday, but I was still useless when it counted. Honestly, I’m frustrated. Next time, if something were to happen to you, I’ll fight for you.”

She said that with a straight face, it made me burst into laughter.

“Don’t worry, it’s all fine now. No way such a terrible thing would happen again.”

“No, we wouldn’t know what life has in store for us. I’m not talking about fate, curse, shinigami or anything like that. Just life in general.”

“I see, I guess you’re right.” I said, nodding.

There will be a lot of difficulties awaiting us from now on. A strong headwind will blow in our direction, it was a natural occurrence.

“When that time comes, let’s be there for each other.”

“You’re talking as if we’re married or something.”

She laughed, treating my words lightly, making me panic a little.

“Huh, what? Does that mean you don’t want to marry me? Are my feelings one-sided?”

“No! I want to become family with you, Yuuma! It’s just, you know…”

Her cheeks turned red.

“I want a more romantic proposal coming from you!”

Ah, I see.

Alright, then.

I stood up and knelt down in front of her. Seeing my action, she let out a gasp.

The sky was full of stars, the river was running quietly and the air was clear.

There wasn’t a more suitable place to do it other than this place.

“Natsuhara Suzuno-san.”

I took her left hand, gently kissing her ring finger.

“Will you be a part of my family? Will you marry me?”

With her cheeks dyed red, Suzuno smiled.

Her smile looked so gentle.

“Yes. I will marry you. I will be a part of your family until the day I die, Yuuma.”

We held each other’s hands.

From now on, I hope that we could be together forever. No matter what kind of difficulties we faced, I hope that we could overcome it together.

I hope that the two of us could walk together without relying on the power of fate.
