The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - Final Volume Chapter 8
Final Volume Chapter 8
One night, Anna was staying overnight somewhere and Kento was out. My parents brought me and Suzuno to go camping.
It was September. The temperature was still hot, but the air was clearer and the breeze that blew through the car as it went up the mountain was considerably cooler.
“If Yuuma and Suzuno-chan got married, Suzuno-chan would become my daughter, right?”
They said they took us since Suzuno never went camping with her family before; they wanted her to experience it once. In reality, my mother just wanted to get to know her better.
The campsite was within the mountains. After we pitched a big tent, we enjoyed a barbeque party that night.
“Eat as much as you like, Suzuno-san. You’re a little too skinny.”
My father grilled more meat and put them on her plate. She couldn’t exactly refuse him and she couldn’t eat all of them, so I helped her by eating half.
After we were done eating, my mother made us coffee. She grinded the coffee beans herself.
We wrapped our hands on the warm cups while looking at the night sky by the creek.
My parents sat a distance away from the tent, enjoying their time together.
The trees around the creek had ceased to grow, making it possible to see the stars from the ground.
Seeing the starry night made me remember that particular night.
“That night, after I got beaten up and rescued by my dad, I fell on the ground. Back then, I could see a sight that you can’t normally see in Tokyo. The starry sky. It looked exactly like this…”
“There were a lot of surprising things happening on that night…”
Today was the first time we talked about that night face to face like this.
All this time, Suzuno was still in a state of shock. She had just graduated from middle school, but she had to face a group of people who wouldn’t hesitate to assault her, not to mention all the knives pointed at her neck. Even I was still unable to sort my feelings properly, let alone her.
“I always wondered. How did you manage to find that we were in that place, Yuuma? Komazawa Park is a huge place.”
I had been wondering whether I should explain everything to her or not.
And I decided.
“I found out because it was my second time.”
“Second time?”
Suzuno sent me a probing look.
“Yeah. The first time was a failure, I died.”
I decided to tell Suzuno the truth. It might scare her, but…
“I died to protect you once, but the shinigami gave me a chance.”
I told her everything, my failure during my first attempt and my impatience during my second attempt.
So that would be a foundation for us to stand on, to continue living together from now on.
