The Happiness That The Shinigami Gave Me - Final Volume Chapter 5
Final Volume Chapter 5
The room fell silent for a while. A tumultuous silence, everyone was occupied with their own thoughts.
“Yuuma.”
It was my father who broke up the silence with a groan.
“I want you to listen to my story for a bit…no…”
He shook his head.
“This story is related to you. It’s the story about your real parents.”
“Eh?”
My shoulders jumped. My real parents was a topic they always tried to avoid whenever I tried to bring it up.
Now he was about to tell me.
“To put it simply, your real mother was my little sister. Meaning, you are my nephew.”
“Well, I consider you as my son now, though,” he added.
“Your mother, Nozomi, was my little sister. She was ten years younger than me. That girl was a little naive and kept making me worried, so I ended up becoming an overprotective brother to her.”
When Nozomi was still a student, she brought a man home and told everyone that she’d marry him.
At that point, her parents had already passed away and her brother was the one who acted as her guardian.
“I was against it. She was still a high school student and that man was still a college student. Also, well, I didn’t mean to be rude, but he seemed unreliable. He looked thin, listless and more importantly…”
He had a serious illness.
“I just couldn’t bring myself to give my sister to someone like him. When I asked her if she got pregnant, she told me that wasn’t the case. I told her to marry him after both of them graduated from college and had a way to earn money to live.”
But, in the end…
“They eloped.”
Anguish filled my father’s face.
“Later, I found out that the man didn’t have much time left to live. That was why she decided to marry him. She truly loved that man…”
Afterwards, my father tried to find her whereabouts, but he couldn’t find her. By that point, he already had children of his own and he was also busy with his own job.
“The next time I saw her, she had already passed away.”
My lips were sealed shut. When she had passed away: that meant after she tried to do a double su**ide with me.
“The police called me to confirm her identity. It was hard for me to accept that it was really her who had died. That was when I found out that she gave birth to you, Yuuma.”
By then, I was already seven years old. I was born a few years after they eloped.
“Then, I learned that your real father was already dead.”
Tears began to trickle from his eyes.
“I regretted it. In the last years of her life, Nozomi was tortured by her loneliness. And she vented all her pain on you, her own son. It was an unforgivable act, but by all means, I’m also as guilty as she was for making it happen in the first place…”
Mother gently placed her hand on Father’s trembling arm. With difficulties, he started to speak again.
“…Because I didn’t approve of her marriage, she lost the only person she could seek help from.”
“That’s why…” Father looked at me with eyes full of tears.
“I promised myself her son would live a happy life.”
My eyes were also burning.
I see. That’s why he was so nice to me. That’s why even though I’m not his real son, he showered me with so much love…
“But, I couldn’t even do that well. You didn’t open up to us for a long time. It was painful for me. It felt like I was receiving retribution for abandoning Nozomi for so long. In the end, it was Suzuno-san who made you happy, not me… I couldn’t do anything for you…”
I shook my head.
“That isn’t true… That’s…”
So frustrating. Why was it at times like this I couldn’t form my words properly? The words that I wanted to say were stuck in my throat and I couldn’t do anything about it.
Luckily, I wasn’t alone this time. Suzuno was beside me. She spoke up.
“Um, I’m sorry for interrupting, but Yuuma once told me about his…real mother… I always thought that he’s a little strange. How could someone who was treated horribly like that grow into someone so wonderful? And now I know why. It’s thanks to his new family…”
Yes. My childhood might have given me terrible traumas, but it was the Yamaokas who protected me from them.
“Dad…Mom…”
I reached out my hand. Father then placed his hand on mine, followed by mom soon after.
“I’m happy…that I was raised by both of you…”
Dad sobbed, repeating the word ‘Thank you’ over and over while looking at mine and Suzuno’s faces alternately.
“I’m sure you two will make a good family. You two are still young, there are bound to be hardships that you’ll face, but this time, we’ll be here to support you…”
