Chapter 46: The School Festival of Saijo High (3)
“Yoshizumi-kun, I’m ready now. Aya-chan said that they’ll be exploring the festival with Tanabe-kun. I’m sorry that she gave you all so much trouble…” (Haruka)
Aizawa-san gave me an apologetic look.
“I understand… so please stop making that face. Where would you like to go? I wouldn’t want them to be the only ones having fun.” (Hiroto)
We sat down on a nearby bench. Aizawa-san leaned in, peeking at my unfolded pamphlet from the side.
I couldn’t concentrate on the pamphlet because of her soft, sweet smell.
“Oh! I’d like to go over here…” (Haruka)
“Yes? Where would you like to go?”
Aizawa-san muttered in a soft voice, pointing to the pamphlet.
“Right over there. It says there’s a festival.”
“Festival? I remember a senior mentioning it to me. They’re hosting a joint-event with all the classes, would you like to go?”
“Yes! It sounds fun!”
Festivals… it’s been a while since I’ve gone to one. Between the baseball games and rehabilitation, there hadn’t been much freetime.
“Alright, let’s go.”
Aizawa-san and I headed to the place where the festival was being held.
The food stalls were located between the main gate and the school, but the fair was held in the courtyard.
Inside the school, there were more food stands; the gymnasium also had plays and performances. I do remember Sho and Tsubasa telling me about their stand-up comedy show tonight… I’d take a look if there’s enough time left.
“Aizawa-san, we’re almost there. It’s quite crowded.”
“You’re right… but the little kids seem to be having fun. Seeing them brings back memories of my childhood.”
“Yeah… it really has been a long time.”
Children were running around happily, laughing and playing around with one another. It seemed that the kids had more fun outside than at the plays and performances.
“What would you like to do first, Aizawa-san?”
“I’d like to go…there!
Aizawa-san pointed at a stand. It was a stall where you played ring toss for prizes.
“Ring toss… let’s go for it.”
She seems to be really excited… it’s quite cute.
“Aizawa-san, will you be fine?”
“Thanks to a certain someone who taught me how to throw, I think I’ll be okay. Here I go!”
It was nice to see a stand that had target shooting. It wasn’t the type where one aimed with a toy gun, but one where you had to hit the prize you wanted with a small ball.
The little kids could throw from close by and the adults would throw from farther away. Each stall was set up so that everyone could enjoy the game equally.
Aizawa-san was throwing from the adult zone.
“Yoshizumi-kun… I can’t hit it!” (Haruka)
I’m not sure what she expected…
“It’s different from a baseball, so it’s harder to aim.”
“I thought it would be fine since you taught me…”
“Do you want to try again? I’ll help you this time.”
“Yes, I’ll try one more time.”
Aizawa-san and I got back in line. When it was our turn, I guided her on where to throw it.
“It’s still not good…”
Aizawa-san also missed on her second attempt.
“There are only two balls left… lend them to me. Which one were you aiming at?”
“That one!”
Aizawa-san pointed at a keychain of a small bear.
She was throwing the ball at a totally different place, I couldn’t even tell…
“That one? Alright then.”
It’s a bit small, I’m not sure if I can even hit it.
With a wry smile on my face, I received the ball from Aizawa-san.
I can’t throw normally because of my leg injury… but this distance should be manageable.
I focused on the keychain and prepared to throw.
“Wait a minute! Yoshizumi, you can’t!”
Someone came running toward me, calling out.
What do you mean, I can’t?
“Haa… haa… I made it in time. Yoshizumi, you’re too good. If you throw, we’ll lose all our prizes.”
It was a senior from the baseball team.
“Captain, isn’t that kind of harsh?”
“I’m retired, so I’m not the captain anymore. Yoshizumi, if you’re going to throw, you’ll have to do it from back here.”
He pulled me further back.
Wait a second… seriously?
“Senpai, isn’t this a little too far?”
“The kids’ version is at the front, the adults’ version is further back. You start here.”
He had pulled me even past the adult section.
“With my injury, I won’t be able to throw from this far…”
“I’m sorry, but you’ll have to give up, Yoshizumi-kun.”
I’ll still have to try.
“Sorry, Aizawa-san. I don’t think I can get it…”
“It’s okay if you can’t…”
Although she tried to hide it, it seems as if she was disappointed.
Did he want that bear keychain that badly?
I’ll get it for her. I have to.
I threw the first ball.
It sailed right over the keychain, missing it.
“The ball’s too light to control, but I think I can do it. Aizawa-san, I’ll get it this time.”
“Yes! But please don’t push yourself, you’re still injured.”
I nodded and threw the second ball, aiming carefully.
“It hit! Yoshizumi-kun, you hit it! You’re amazing!”
Thank goodness.
I managed to knock it down.
“Aizawa-san, wait here a minute. I’ll get your keychain.”
I walked over to the senior.
“Huh… you actually hit it. Yoshizumi, you’re officially banned from target practice during the school festival! Here, just take it…your pretty girlfriend will be happy, huh?”
“C-Captain… Senpai! Whoa, no, we’re not like that!”
“Not like that? You two seem pretty close to me. Look around—see all those envious faces?”
I accepted the keychain and returned to Aizawa-san. Sure enough, plenty of bystanders were staring at us.
“Yoshizumi-kun, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s fine. Here, Aizawa-san—your keychain.”
Feeling a little self-conscious all of a sudden, I awkwardly handed it to her.
“Thank you! I’ll take good care of it.”
“You don’t have to go that far. I just wanted to get it.”
“No, really. I’m glad you gave it to me. I’ll put it on my school bag.”
I’m glad she’s happy. However, the stares were getting a little annoying.
“Let’s move somewhere else.”
“Sure!”
We started walking away from the stalls.
