Chapter 13
The Way Back with the Princess
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“How long have you been waiting for me…?”
“…”
She didn’t answer my question, but I could expect she waited at least for two hours.
Even students who have committee meeting should have been able to get home by 5:30 or so. Aikawa-san, like me, was not a member of any club activities, so I know she has been waiting for quite a while.
“Aikawa-san, I’ll buy you some juice. It’s my fault for being late.”
It was now dark on the way home. But I found the vending machine by relying on the bright light, opened my wallet and put in some coins.
It must have been quite a struggle to keep standing in that heat.
I smiled at her with an awkward smile, as a way of thanking her at least.
“…Mhn.”
Aikawa-san pointed her finger at the orange juice that she had bought, labeled “Full of juice!”
I wondered if she likes tangerines, but I pressed the button and bought the orange juice.
A few seconds later, I heard the sound of the juice falling.
I took the cold juice out of the bottom slot and handed it to her.
“Hey, tell me about this next time, okay?”
“…Un.”
If I had been able to tell her that “I would be late today,” she wouldn’t have sweated so much.
I thought to myself, “Why wouldn’t she just leave?” but considering that Aikawa-san’s a bit of a loose cannon, it was unnaturally understandable.
When she opened the can, there was a slightly grating sound of a click. With a gurgling sound, Aikawa-san enjoyably drank the juice.
“Is it good?”
“Mhn.”
Her expression didn’t seem to have changed at all, but I could tell she was a little happy about it.
(Somehow… I can tell, can’t I?)
I don’t know if my sixth sense was working, but I was able to notice that she was not feeling well even then.
It’s a bit of a strange feeling, but I felt like I could vaguely sense her intentions.
After we finished drinking our juice, we walked towards the station again.
On the day we shared the umbrella, I was excited to go through this because it was a road I don’t take often.
However, as we walked along the same road again, I got tired of looking at the scenery. Then my eyes were glued to Aikawa-san, who was standing right next to me.
“Do you like oranges, Aikawa-san?”
“…Un.”
It seems that if a question was easy to answer, she would answer it. Then I tried my best to broaden the conversation by trial and error.
As much as I could, I tried to talk about oranges and topics that could be answered with yes or no.
As I was thinking about this, my words became a little choppy as I spoke. The tempo was a little slow, but the conversation still went on.
“Do you eat the white part of the orange, Aikawa-san?”
“…Uun.”
“Why, not? I heard they’re very nutritious… Do you like sweet treats in general?”
“Un.”
I was a little happy, because my communication skills were so poor at the beginning of my freshman year that I could barely carry on a conversation. [TLN: haha same]
This was the third time in a row that I’ve gotten a response. If possible, I’d like to get at least ten in a row.
“Oh, we’re here.”
“Hmm.”
We arrived at Gifu station at a slightly faster pace than before.
It seemed that we had some time before the next train arrived, so we talked for a while.
Well, I don’t know if Aikawa-san was excited or not, but I’m thankful that she’s responding to me.
“Speaking of which…”
I tried to continue talking about sweets. But I was running out of things to talk about, and there was a bit of silence.
The station’s announcement sounded very clear, and I exhaled once, looking into her clear blue eyes.
…I wanted to continue talking to her like this if I could. But…I was still curious about the things that bothered me.
『It’s a bit wild to say, you know? You can ask Mio about it later.』
Those words are from Kenji-san. Now… will she answer me?
She ignored my question when we shared an umbrella that day, but maybe she could answer my question that had been bothering me for a while now.
I’ve asked Mina, I’ve asked Yusuke about it… but still, I couldn’t figure it out.
“Why… are you so friendly with me?”
I said it. This was not a question that could be answered with a yes or no answer. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much of a response either.
Still, I really wanted to tell her directly. If she replied, the fog that had been hanging over my mind for a while would clear. Even if she didn’t reply, I could give up to some extent.
“…”
Then she turned her body back to me. Her expression didn’t change at all, but I could tell that she had responded to my words.
“Is this how you treat other people, Aikawa-san?”
“…Uun.”
She shook her head and denied it.
“To be honest, I’m a little worried that I might have offended you, Aikawa-san… I was wondering if there was something you wanted to talk about or something like that.
“Uun.”
She denied my words again. Aikawa-san took out her phone from her pocket in a daze.
Illuminated by the lights in the station, she slowly operated the phone.
“…?”
As I was wondering, she showed me the screen of her phone. As far as I could see, it seemed to be a notepad app…
『Would you like to exchange contact information?』
That’s what it reads. I was a little bothered by this unexpected action.
(Oh, I see. If it’s a chat, she can explain it without talking.)
Realizing her intentions a little later, I took out my phone and prepared to exchange contact information. I heard that technology has advanced so much that you can exchange contacts just by shaking your phone up and down.
“Aikawa-san, shake your phone.”
“…Mhn.”
It’s been about a year since I last exchanged contact information with Yusuke.
Of course, this was the first time I had exchanged with someone of the opposite sex, except for Mina. I was a little nervous, but my curiosity to know the reason outweighed that.
She clumsily waved her phone up and down with her hands, as if she wasn’t used to exchanging contact information.
Then the sound effect of the successful exchange rang out, and Aikawa-san smiled a little happily.
Aikawa-san, who kept waving her phone as she watched, was very innocent and adorable.
Then I was finally forced to accept that this event was real when the name “Aikawa Mio” appeared on my screen.
No way… No way… I, the epitome of introverts, just exchanged contact info with the Silent Princess of the school!?
(I’m so happy…)
However, while I was soaking in the afterglow, I received an incoming call from Mina, who was probably very upset. I said “it’s nothing” to Aikawa-san and swiped the screen to start the call.
『Hey, you little sh*t!!! Don’t you know that the bath is getting cold!?』
“WHA–!?”
With a buzzing sound still ringing in it, I immediately pulled my ear off the screen.
That was dangerous, my eardrum almost broke… anyways, Mina seemed to be very hysterical and very upset.
“I’m sorry, some of my seniors gave me a hard time during our committee meeting. Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon…”
『Haa!? Who the hell is that! If you don’t go home soon, you won’t get to eat, okay!』
Aikawa-san seemed to have heard Mina’s voice, and she looked at me with a smile.
As I hung up the phone, Aikawa-san sent me a text. I heard a buzzing sound and looked at the screen.
『Thank you. See you tomorrow.』
Apparently, Mina’s voice from earlier had given her the idea.
I was worried about letting the girl go home alone, but it would be too overprotective of her if I went with her.
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
“Un.”
In the end, I felt like I had gotten off on the wrong foot, but I guess I could just ask her via text after I left.
I closed my phone, said my goodbyes, and hurried home.
