Chapter 12
Committee Meeting and On The Way Home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(I can’t wait for this to be over…)
I’m in an air-conditioned conference room right now. It was a little chilly inside the room, and in addition to us second-year students, there were nervous-looking first-year juniors and even third-year seniors.
The school bell had rung earlier, so most of the students were probably already on their way home. But there are a few exceptions.
“And with that, next time’s campaign will be calling for thoroughly washing hands…”
That’s the school committee. At our school, there are the Environmental Committee, Broadcasting committee, and the Health Committee to which I belong, and every student has a role to play.
Well, the poor student from the health committee usually had it the worst.
“Then, let’s get this started.”
The president of the committee, a smart-looking senior with glasses, said that then sat down at his desk and started staring at his papers.
The reason why health committee members are considered to have it the worst… was because they have to collect a lot of survey questionnaires, so they inevitably end up coming home late.
Looking at the large number of questionnaires in front of me, I almost wanted to hold my head. I didn’t want to join this committee if I could help it, but I had to resent my reserved nature for this.
I want to punch myself as hard as I can for raising my hand in response to the mysterious pressure of “You’re going to do this, right?”
By the way, Aikawa-san’s a member of the Environment Committee, and I sometimes saw her cleaning the courtyard.
(I wish I was on the environmental committee, too…)
Since the system was to choose one man and one woman, I can’t help but imagine an IF story where Aikawa-san and I are cleaning together.
It sounds like fun… for a little while I tried to escape from reality, but in the end I’m brought back to consciousness by the pile of papers in front of me.
(Well, I think I’ll be done by five o’clock…)
The content of the questionnaires were something like,『Do you brush your teeth in the morning?』We have to put the results in the newspaper every time, so we have to do this sort of work every time.
To be honest, I don’t think it’s necessary to put the results in the paper, since not many people read the school newspaper anyways.
“Ah, hey, you just need to staple this, so just do it.”
As I continued to work on something that even a monkey could do, a pile of papers was suddenly placed on top of my table. As I turned my head in disgust, I saw my senior who was always trying to pass me off.
“Err… isn’t that senpai’s wor–”
“Don’t worry, it won’t take that long.”
I tried to argue with him as best as I could, but he didn’t seem to listen to me at all.
He left the conference room in a hurry with a reply that was not even a reason.
(Oh Well, I’ll be done by 5:30pm…)
It was my fault if I say so myself. It was a day when I finished my work a little early. I had nothing to do when I got home, so I decided to help my classmates with their work for a little while.
Fortunately, none of my classmates tried to pass me off, but that’s when the seniors saw me.
“What? He’s going home? What a jerk, right? Hey, can you do this?”
“Take care of mine, too~”
The seniors were sluggishly holding their bags with one hand and dropping off their papers at my place. The pile of papers grew and grew, until it was almost at my neck.
I fully understand that when one person slacks off, it makes you want to slack off too, but why would they put the papers in my place?
Well, maybe I’ve been labeled as, “This guy is a pushover” by my seniors. I honestly didn’t think that a little act of kindness would get me into such a bad situation…
Questionnaires, documents, scripts for the broadcast… I had to use a computer to type in all this stuff. They’ve left me behind a lot of annoying work.
People around me gave me a pitiful look, but I sincerely wish they would help me rather than feel sorry for me.
(I’ll be done by 7pm, I guess…)
It’s just before the last dismissal time, but it’s not impossible to finish if I start now.
I understand that turning a blind eye is the safest course of action for those around me, but I’d like to see some action taken.
“Damn it…”
I complained secretly so that no one would hear me, and went on with my work, suppressing my languid feelings.
The people around me who had finished their work were leaving the conference room one after another, and by the time all the work was done… The clock was pointing to 7pm.
––
“I’ll say no next time…”
I don’t want to be pestered any more than I already am. The lock screen of the phone, which was on silent mode, showed a large number of “missed calls” from Mina, which made my heart ache a little.
Looking out the window, I could see that the sun had completely set.
The lights on the school grounds were dimly lit, and the wind turbines had stop moving.
Feeling a little lonely, I returned the key to the conference room and headed for the shoebox.
If I didn’t leave soon, Mina, who was always in a bad mood, would get even worse. Mina was in charge of the meals while our parents were away, so I had to get home before she finished cooking.
As soon as the food cools down, I can see that Mina will definitely be in a foul mood.
I took out my shoes, then I sat down to put them on and leave the school building.
It’s still May, so it’s not completely dark, but it’s still dark enough to make the surrounding feel a little creepy.
“It’s so hot… I should hurry to go home.”
“Un.”
“Guess so… wai– wha!?”
I jumped back in surprise when I suddenly heard a voice from my side, but there was Aikawa-san, tilting her head and looking at me curiously.
She was holding a bottle of orange juice in her right hand, and her forehead was slightly sweaty.
“Say, why are you here so late, Aikawa-san? Have you been forced to do some work by any chance?”
“Uun.”
No, I’m the only one who was forced to do the work. The committee was supposed to be a social group of equals, so I don’t think that Aikawa-san would normally be subjected to such a situation. If that’s the case…
“Then, why…?”
“Mhn.”
When I was puzzled, she handed me the orange juice she was holding and relaxed her stiff expression as if she was a little relieved.
When I grabbed the orange juice, it didn’t feel cold and there were no water droplets on it, so I knew it had been quite a while since she bought it. Then, could it be…?
“You… you’ve been waiting for me…?”
“Mhn.”
She said so while softly nodding… and gave me a little smile. [TLN: sanaol inaantay…]
