- Chapter 2 Part 2 - Estimate The Amount Of Lost Memories (2)
“Welcome, Sir! …Oh, Suguru-senpai? Eh, isn’t it too early?”
Nagisa’s smile for customer number one in front of the classroom quickly turned into a face of curiosity.
“No, because. I promised to come to your place first when the Fuyo Festival started.”
“But I don’t expect you to come so soon and so out of breath!”
It was only two minutes before the end of the executive committee meeting when President Fuyuki broadcast the opening of the meeting. I then immediately dashed to the “Baked Pudding Cafe” in first-year A class. I had to keep my distance from Mr. Aogashima and calm down.
“Ah. Fufufumm, goodness, Suguru-senpai, did you really want to see me that badly?”
“…It’s not that. I just wanted to be the first to see you serve.”
“Isn’t that the same thing? But I’m sorry to say this. Look, I haven’t changed yet!”
Nagisa, for some reason, proudly flaunted her uniform, turned around and fluttered her skirt. Then a lively-looking female student at the reception desk appeared stunned and said, “That’s because~,” and began to tickle Nagisa’s waist.
“Nagisa-chan is so shy~. This is not the time to be saying that you are not confident, look, look, look, the senpai in question was looking forward to it so much.”
“Wha, mmm, stop, o-okay, I get it! -Suguru-senpai, please order here and wait at your seat! But don’t get your hopes up!
Nagisa hid in the curtain at the rear of the classroom. It was impossible not to get my hopes up. Every time we talked about the exhibit, she kept saying, “The costumes are so cute.”
“…Well, I’ll have the chocolate-baked pudding and hot tea, please.”
Pointing to the menu list as I ordered, a female student who appeared to be a friend of Nagisa’s tapped her smartphone and said, “Sure thing.”
“It would be 500 yen. And please take care of Nagisa-chan. Is this hassle Suguru-senpai?”
“What have you heard of me as…?”
“Totally not because you two are in love, but you are putting off your relationship with strange reasoning.”
I chuckled as I placed the fee on the tray. When explained objectively by a third party, I was quite an irresponsible person.
But the current situation was even worse.
I was not lying in my feelings of choosing Nagisa. But there was another feeling — a fondness for Mr. Aogashima — that was sitting in my heart. If it were to be exposed, I would be in big trouble.
Nagisa would become uneasy. Aogashima-san would not give up on me.
The connections were tangled, but I have no choice but to untangle them from now on without letting anyone know. In other words, I have to prove my love for Nagisa again, and then I have to give up my love for Mr. Aogashima. That was what I have to do.
I sat down at the far end of the classroom, at a classroom desk with a blue checkered tablecloth, and a male student with his hair pulled back immediately offered me a cup of tea.
Looking out the window, I saw that the field was quite crowded even though it was just after the opening moment. I see quite a few students who seem to be preparing for entrance exams. Fuyo High School here has a good deviation score, a good location, no strange rumors, and a good track record for higher education these days. In fact, it was a very popular school. I never came here to play, because it was my third choice.
In middle school, I was aiming for the same high school as Minagi. But I was the only one who failed. After receiving the result, Minagi didn’t go to the high school that she was going to enter with me and entered a prestigious girls’ school with a higher level of education. It was quite a depressing episode just to recall it.
“Hello. Let’s see, jasmine tea, hot tea, and two chocolate-baked puddings.”
Then, suddenly. I heard a familiar voice, and I couldn’t help but turn my head and make eye contact with the owner of the voice. It was Minagi.
“No, what are you doing coming on the first morning of the first day…”
It was a wonderful coincidence that we would meet at the very beginning of the day. It seemed that she noticed right away, and we made intense eye contact. I know, I know, we can’t have ex-calm moves, right? I responded in my mind and elegantly tipped my teacup.
“S-Shirase! You, what are you doing here!?”
A sudden jerk. From behind Minagi, a familiar boy peeked out.
“Buhaha! Gee! Agh! No, what? The kid from back then—!
“I-I’m not a kid!”
It was the boy who had fought with me the other day. The boy shouted loudly, but the next moment, he huffed and hid in the corridor. I wondered what was going on all of a sudden, but I soon came to a conclusion. The boy was afraid of a certain person.
“Don’t worry. Kuroiwa—that blonde ponytail is not here.”
“Y-You should have told me that fast!”
The boy blushed and shuffled back next to Minagi. Minagi looked at me and him alternately, comparing us suspiciously. I looked back at her questioningly. What was going on? Was that boy an acquaintance of Minagi’s? If that were the case. A hypothesis came to my mind. No, it couldn’t be true.
“Good morning, Suguru. Are you by any chance acquainted with Yuuhi?”
Minagi naturally took a seat at the table next to mine and asked me curiously. Yuuhi must be the name of the boy sitting in front of Minagi, just across from me. When I glanced at him, he turned his face away from me.
“I don’t really know him, I just got tangled up with him near here the other day.”
Haa? It was you that got tangled up with me. Since then, that woman has appeared in my dreams many times and—no, no, it’s nothing.
“Near here? Yuuhi? Why?”
“I-I’m just here for a quick look around. So that I can properly escort Minagi-san.”
The boy blushed and blurted out. Hmm? Hmmmmm? No way, really, this boy.
“…Hey, Minagi. I was wondering if it might be…”
“Oh, yeah. Let me introduce you. My neighbor and boyfriend, Akikusa Yuuhi-kun.
Minagi said it as a matter of course and pointed her palm at him. The Akikusa boy, who was introduced to her boyfriend, stared at me with the same intensity as the other day and greeted me with a blunt, “Hey.”
“…Seriously?”
No other words came out. No, because, ehhh…? We were both second year in high school, and this boy, I believe, was talking about turning middle schooler this year. Obviously, this age difference…Ehhhh?
I took a deep breath, for now, I tried to calm my disturbed mind. First, let’s accept the situation as it was. Then, let’s tried to communicate with this rabid dog.
“Let’s see, Akikusa—Yuuhi-kun.”
“Don’t put a kun after my name.”
“Okay, Yuuhi. Then you can call me by ‘san’ too.”
“Haa? Why?”
Why was that? I’m older than you. I coughed to loosen the wrinkles on my brow.
“…So, how did you know about me?”
“Of course Minagi-san told me about you.”
For some reason, Yuuhi responded with a pouty, smug look on his face. I looked at Minagi questioningly. “Ah, by the way,” Minagi’s irresponsible voice escaped from her mouth.
“Like I showed him a picture of me saying this is my ex-boyfriend. I’m amazed you remembered that.”
Minagi leaned over and messily stroked Yuuhi’s hair with an innocent smile. I used to get that a lot too. Yuuhi narrowed his eyes for a moment, but quickly covered his head.
“D-Don’t do it in front of people like this!”
“Heh, so it’s okay if it’s not in public. Then let’s go behind the curtain over there for a while.”
“Isn’t that peeking!?”
Their smiling exchange reminded me somewhat of our old selves, and it was somewhat nostalgic. But when they told me not to stare at them, I cowered and took a sip of my tea.
“…Also, Minagi. Don’t show your ex-boyfriend’s picture to your current boyfriend. It’s a little weird.”
And he was still in middle school. It must be complicated. How could you do that and then tell me that I couldn’t have an ex move?
“Ahaha, I can’t even make excuses for it. I certainly lacked delicacy, sorry Yuuhi.”
“Ha, I’m not the kind of boy who gets jealous over something like that.”
With an air of composure, Yuuhi sipped from the straw of his jasmine tea. I think his attitude towards me was a bit aggressive for that… Well, I guess it was nothing for me to worry about.
I looked out the window again. A large number of balloons were swaying in the wind. This was the specialty of the Fuyo Festival. They looked beautiful, but setting them up, including inflating them, was quite a task. While I was looking back on the process of stringing the balloons one by one with a loop of string attached to the handle, I heard footsteps coming from behind me.
“Ta-da! Thank you for waiting!”
Nagisa’s voice. I tried to turn around, but before I could, my vision was blocked from behind. I felt a cool, soft palm sensation, and it was beginning to warm up my eyes.
“Hey, Nagisa. I’m here early. Wow, you look so cute in that outfit.”
“Ehehe, it was designed by a girl in my class. Thank you for coming, Yuuhi-kun.”
“Hi.”
It seemed that Nagisa and Yuuhi knew each other. It was the same “Hey” that greeted me, but the tone of voice was clearly different. Naturally, it was a friendly “stammer” unlike mine.
“…Eh, don’t be stubborn and show me too.”
“I can’t. Umm…well, I’m embarrassed.”
She refused. Wouldn’t I be permanently blinded at this point? Just when I feared that I was about to be, my vision opened up.
Nagisa leaped from behind me to the front, dressed in a brown-toned maid’s uniform. It was not the kind of revealing dress that I often see, but rather an elegant, yet cute, design that was perfected with an exquisite sense of balance.
“What can I say…You’re very cute.”
“Please don’t praise me so sincerely. …It’s embarrassing.”
Nagisa’s face turned red and she turned over and squeezed her skirt. I, on the other hand, couldn’t look directly at her because she was so cute.
“But really, all I can think of to say is, well, it’s cute.”
“Hya, so, you know, that kind of thing, ugh…”
Naturally, the two gallery members would have guessed if I had spoken in this tone. Oh look, Minagi was looking at us alternately with her mouth gaping open.
“Hey, Suguru, hey, hey. I didn’t think it was possible—But the person Nagisa like is?”
“Umm, it this Suguru-senpai sitting here…”
Nagisa, sitting in front of me, stiffly looked straight down and indicated by pointing at me.
“Ugh, no way, eh. What, eh, Nagisa, ehhh, ehhhhh!?”
Minagi quickly covered her mouth with her hands and flapped her legs in surprise, almost jumping up. Her usual composure was completely gone, to the extent that I was surprised. I haven’t seen such a reaction from Minagi since I gave her a surprise letter on our anniversary.
“I mean, eh, what, you mean…you two are dating?”
“Kek, messing with your ex-girlfriend’s sister, you’re nothing short of a lolicon.”
“Hey. She’s one year younger than me, so it’s okay. Also, that’s an oversized boomerang.”
If anything, it was a bigger boomerang when it hit her back.
“So, when did this happen? Who confessed? Hey, eh, how far did you two get?”
Minagi, her eyes blazing, leaned forward and asked Nagisa questions. Nagisa looked at me a little troubled, so I answered for her.
“Well…that’s the thing. Well, we are not in a relationship yet.”
“Eh, but you two are in love with each other, right? Then, just go out with each other right here and now!”
“Minagi, that’s absurd.”
Yuuhi commented in exasperation. Maybe he was a surprisingly good guy.
“So, Suguru, after me, you choose Nagisa, could it be that my face was your type. Heh~, you were in the habit of being all regal on the call the other day, weren’t you?”
“That’s a misunderstanding. Face has nothing to do with it…maybe.”
“”Call the other day..?””
Nagisa and Yuuhi make steely eye contact with each other.
“Fmmm, when we were dating, you told me how cute I was. When we broke up, this is what you say. You’re so inconsistent.”
“N-No, stop, that’s not what we’re talking about.”
“”You said she was cute…?””
It seemed as if eye contact has become more rugged.
“Well, I guess you’re my apprentice brother-in-law from today onward. Nice to meet you.”
Minagi said this with a hearty sense of enjoyment. It don’t want to hear that, it reminded me of what she said on the phone. I don’t want to be the brother-in-law who was always going to get teased.
“Ah, it’s all right, Suguru. Don’t worry, I’ll take the fact that you were so moved that you cried when you received a thank-you letter from me in the past to my grave.”
“Why are you revealing this?”
“This is your graveyard.”
“Why am I dying here? I mean, you’re taking it to the grave, you’re coming to make an offering at my graveyard. That’s quite a kick on the body.”
“Ah, there’s more. Yes. There was heavy rain that day—”
“Stop. Don’t talk about it.”
Who said no ex-calm move? You’re going to ex move me to death. I pressed a candy ball to Minagi’s lips to cover her mouth. I realized that was the move I made when we were dating came out naturally, and I hastily pulled my hand back.
“…Ah, no, I’m sorry.”
“Nn. It’s okay, nothing. It was kind of nostalgic. Fufu, this flavor hasn’t changed either.”
Minagi smiled aloofly as she rolled the candy around in her mouth. She showed no sign of concern.
“Nu, nununu. Nununununu. Suguru-senpai, you’re flirting too much with my sister! You can’t go any further, you’ll be detained on the charge of excessive flirting!”
“And I’ll be your prison guard!”
The two voices shook with displeasure, and they began to create new crimes and punishments.
“Great. Then the four of us can live in my house. Suguru, how about it? Would you like to get arrested?”
“Why would I?”
Minagi chuckled and the mood instantly relaxed…and Nagisa let out a languid “haaaa” sigh and threw her arms up on the desk.
“I’m kind of jealous of you, Onee-chan. You knew so many things about Suguru-senpai that I don’t know, and you two have so many wonderful memories. I wish I could share some of them.”
In response to Nagisa’s gaze, Minagi shook her.
“Wonderful memories, huh. The fact that we are able to talk happily like this now was a result of the correction of memories. There were a lot of bad things, too. But since they are already past, they are only beautified. Nagisa would understand when you and Suguru break up.”
Don’t break up a relationship before we even start dating. Hey there boy, don’t nod your head so strongly.
“Well, Shirase. What’s with the stamp?”
Suddenly, Yuuhi pointed to a stamp stand by the window.
“Yeah, we are having a stamp rally. Didn’t you get a stamp book at the reception?”
“Yes, this. I got the explanation at the reception. Here, this one was for Yuuhi. Look, look, look, there are many different courses. Hmmm…This one. It’s called the 『Satisfaction Course』. Do you want to try it, Yuuhi?
“I’m not a kid enough to fall for such childish tricks.”
“But here on this page — prizes to be won in a drawing. Would you like to try this with me?”
“…I will.”
You’re completely in her palm. I said he was a rabid dog, but Yuuhi was much more obedient than I was.
