- Chapter 2.5 Hint 1: Middle School Second-Year, Winter
At that moment, I heard the front door close. I felt a soft touch on my lips. It took me a moment to realize the situation. I’ve just been kissed.
“What the hell are you doing?”
I lost my strength and I fell on my butt in the doorway. Minagi must have been amused by my reaction because she giggled and looked down at me with a mischievous look on her face.
“What’s that, uh, a welcome home kiss? Do you want to eat? Do you want a bath? Or me?”
“That’s for the person who waited, not the guest who walked in with an invitation.
“Suguru, you’re so flippant. How can you bring me into your own house and not get one bit excited?”
“It’s not good if I’m getting excited, you know.”
I managed to keep my composure as I opened the door to the living room. Minagi, who unceremoniously jumped onto the sofa before the owner, flapped her legs innocently, excited by the texture.
“Hey, Suguru. Is this sofa possibly a luxury item?”
“I don’t know, maybe it is.”
Well, it was bought by my father, who was well paid. At least it’s not a bad sofa.
“Is this new?”
“No, I think it is about, uh, three years old?”
“Fmm, it doesn’t look worn out and doesn’t feel that way. It’s really expensive. It’s not fair, Suguru.”
It’s no wonder. The Shirase family does not have the words “family gathering” in their dictionary. It’s a good thing that Minagi is so happy with this sofa because it’s hardly ever used.
I sat down next to Minagi, who sat back down in a well-behaved manner, making an unnatural gap between us. This was the first time I had invited her to my house, and I wasn’t sure how I should behave.
“I’ll never be able to sit on any other couch again after I sat on this one. Will you take responsibility?”
“What would be the best way to take responsibility in this case?”
“Well, you could take me to Hawaii and have our wedding there.”
“That’s a lot of responsibility to take for me…”
Also, we don’t know what’s going to happen that far in the future.
“Ah, Suguru, I bet you were thinking, we don’t know that far in the future.”
“You know what I’m thinking.”
She guessed perfectly and giggled at my reaction.
We really don’t know what the future holds. We never know what will happen.
But somehow, really somehow, I felt that our paths were leading to such a happy future. I could believe, without any reason, that my feelings and Minagi’s feelings would last forever. There was no room for doubt.
“In the first place, we’re not even in high school yet.”
“Are you suggesting that we study in a roundabout way?”
“That’s just what students do.”
I invited her over to my house to study for the exam, thinking that we could concentrate together. The result was this.
“Hmm. But, you know, I’ve got my youth here.”
Minagi turned to me and held out her hands as if she was ready to go. I knew exactly what she wanted, but I was too embarrassed to comply. I deliberately turned my face away from the temptation and muttered, “Good luck, you want to go to the same high school as me.”
“Hmm? I can’t hear you, Suguru?”
She came up to me. Close, very close. That kind of contact when it’s just the two of us is not good. I mustered up the courage to stand up.
“I’ll go make some tea. Do you like Darjeeling?”
But Minagi took my arm — some kind of self-defense technique, I guess — and with a twist of her wrist, she had me falling to the couch in an instant. And then, immediately, she covered me. The tips of her dripping hair touched my skin, tickling me every time.
“I like you more than Darjeeling.”
I didn’t answer. Despite her strong expression, Minagi’s face was bright red. Our gazed were locked and we didn’t look away.
Ahh, ahh. I can feel my breathing getting lighter. I tried to tell my rampaging heart to calm down, but it was a complete waste.
“By the way, Suguru. When are your parents returning?”
“That’s a lot of ‘go’s.”
[TLN: Minagi had a lot of go’s in her sentence, lost in translation.]
“Well, I don’t want to be rude in front of your family, right? So, what do you think?”
“…Don’t know. They probably come home late enough that there was no point for me to know.”
We both moved our faces closer to each other and closed our eyes.
No matter how many times we kissed, there was no taste to it. The sweet scent just came out of nowhere and tickled my nostrils.
