When I went to help build the stage after finishing the three tests, I found that the foundation was more complete than I expected.
From what I saw, the structure was simple.
The base was made of metal pipes and about knee-high. All we had to do was to arrange them in a regular pattern. The only hassle was that it was on sandy soil, so we had to adjust the height a bit. All that was left to do was to lay the boards on top and fix them in place.
The work was not difficult, but it did require power and manpower. So when the study group joined in, the work progressed quickly.
Midori was particularly active in this project.
“Ah, Sueharu, that’s not right. You have to put the board here so that it is hooked.”
She’s powerful, strangely meticulous, and more dexterous than I expected. I’d heard her say that she got frustrated when she sewed, but I guess her skills really came into their own when she’s doing something like carpentry.
As I was working with this in mind, Akane pulled on my hoodie.
“Haru-nii, where are we going to put the speakers?”
“‘…? Is that what you’re worried about?”
“Yes.”
Akane nodded without any expression on her face. It’s just a little more powerful than usual, I guess.
“Well, Akane was the one who was obsessed with music…Are you having fun in the light music club?”
“I don’t fit in with the other members of the club, so I haven’t been there since the summer break.”
“Ah…”
These kinds of topics had been easily heard in the past.
But she, and the source of information, Kuroha, had a delicate relationship since the summer vacation. Even though it could not be helped, she felt a little sad.
“What didn’t work for you?”
“I just want to get better at playing my instrument, but they don’t practice. They just say whatever they want, even though they’re not good at it. That’s why I had enough of them.”
“Oh…”
Ah~, that’s so common~! When I was in middle school, the people who were serious about music were already in their peer groups, not in the light music club.
“I see. That must have been tough.”
“It wasn’t that hard. It’s good that I can practice at home since I’m not in a club.”
Hmmm, there’s nothing wrong with taking up music as a hobby and getting into the practice of it. That’s true, but Akane was still drawn to the direction of loneliness…
If so─
“Hey, Tetsuhiko!”
“What is it?”
“Akane has an opinion about the positioning of the speakers.”
“Eh?”
“?!”
When she saw Tetsuhiko approaching her, Akane immediately hid behind me.
But I wouldn’t allow it, and I lifted her up and forced her to stand in front of me.
“Haru-nii…!”
“Say what you want to say. I’ll give you a boost.”
“…”
Tetsuhiko must have sensed that it would be better not to speak to this child in a careless manner. He waited for Akane to open her mouth.
“The speakers should be placed on that board and that board…Also, since it’s not intended to be played by a large number of people, I think it’s best to keep the angle of the speakers low so that the dancers can feel the presence of the speakers, and the camera can get a good sense of the sound.”
Tetsuhiko widened his eyes and stroked his chin.
“…Okay. I’ll put it down for now, and let me know if you have any suggestions.”
“Yeah. And─”
“Akane, is there anything more?”
“Actually… I made something like this…”
Akane brought out an earphone. The earphones chained together with the cell phone.
She handed one of the earphones to herself and the other to Tetsuhiko and put it in her ear, and then she pressed the play button.
“♪~~ ♪~~”
Oh, this was “Paradise SOS”.
“I don’t know, it’s got a different feel to it. Hmm…Is it the drums? I feel like it’s got a better groove.”
“You’re half right. I changed the bass too.”
“You…were able to input this…”
As expected, Tetsuhiko was surprised by this.
“…It’s a hobby.”
“Sueharu, what’s your decision?”
“I think the one Akane made me listen to is better.”
“The same can be said for me. We’ll use this as the replacement.”
Tetsuhiko took the earphones out of his ears and returned them politely.
“Akane-chan, give me the song later.”
“…Is it okay?”
Akane’s gaze was fixed on me.
I nodded my head.
“Of course. It’s amazing. I didn’t even know you could do this much.”
“… Yeah. Thank you, Haru-nii.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Even so, thank you.”
Akane smiled at me. This was the first time she had smiled since coming here.
This girl tended to be lonely and self-conscious.
But she had amazing abilities, and I sincerely hoped that this was how she would gradually be recognized by the people around her.
EDN: Hi everyone, as usual we’re looking for help on novel/manga translating/editing/whatever else. Please join the NeoSekai TL Discord if you’re interested. Also, please support the author by buying the raws if you can.
TLN: Though this may seem a bit out of place for me as I’m about to step down as the translator, I had set up a new ko-fi goal of $200 because I plan to buy a laptop in which I’ll be using for both translating and studies for my College. Any amount will do as it’ll help me get there one step closer at a time!
