- Chapter 9 - Going to Tokyo with a Childhood Friend (1)

It was early in the afternoon on the 29th of April, the first day of Golden Week. Miyu and I were sitting in front of the computer in the Byte editorial office, silently tapping away at the keyboard as we worked. We were trying to compile the results of our recent Beef Bowl weighing into an article. Incidentally, there were a number of empty desks in the Byte editorial office, and we were free to use them as we pleased, but as usual, Miyu chose the one next to mine.
Kata kata kata. The only sounds were the keyboard and the air conditioner as the sun shone through the window.
“Ryu, how about this?”
Miyu showed me her drafted article.
“Let’s see, let’s see…”
I read out the draft on Miyu’s display.
“In conclusion, we were able to confirm that two Half Beef Bowls are economically better deal than a Regular Beef Bowl. If you want to eat a full meal at Sumiya, why don’t you order two beef bowl halves?”
It ended with those words. It’s not that bad, but…
“No good, I guess.”
Perhaps reading my subtle expression, Miyu looked anxious.
“Ah no, it’s not that really bad, but It’s just that the style of the article seems a little stiff. It should be more like a story.”
“That’s the hard part. Articles of that type on the internet really nail the style.”
I know that what I’m asking is pretty unreasonable. But, is there a better way to write it?
“How about changing the tone of the writing?”
I typed the text in place of Miyu.
“So, with the precious sacrifice of two of our members, we were able to confirm that the weight of two Half Beef Bowl serving is heavier than the weight of a Regular Beef Bowl serving. I hope you, the readers, will make use of the results of this precious experiment in your student life.”
I tried to make the story more science-oriented.
“Isn’t that stiffer than mine?”
“Yeah, but since Byte’s Articles are to provide observation of various situations from a scientific point of view, I think it’s better to be as rigid as this.”
“Hmmm… I guess you’re right. Let’s ask Shun-san’s opinion about the rest.”
“That’s good.”
—After finishing the task, I noticed that my shoulders were a little stiff. As I was turning my shoulders in circles to get some relief, I felt the soft touch of a hand behind me. Ah~ that feels good.
“You’re very good at massaging, Miyu. I think you can open up a business with this.”
I exaggerated my praise a little. Seeing that my shoulders were stiff, Miyu thoughtfully rubbed my shoulders. I’m not a professional at this, but having someone rub my shoulders is a different kind of comfort than doing it myself.
“That’s just an exaggeration. So, customer, how about this one too?”
This time, she slowly rubs my temples. Huh? My shoulders felt a little more comfortable.
“I feel like my shoulders are getting lighter. What did you do?”
“Fufu. Actually, you know. The nerves in the face are often connected to the neck and shoulders. That’s why a facial massage can be very effective.”
Miyu then added, “I heard that from a chiropractor I know. I didn’t know if it was true, though.”
“How did you learn how to do it, Miyu?”
“In our Department, you sit all the time and your shoulders get stiff, right? That’s why I studied it.”
Miyu seemed to be proud of it. She’s really good at learning and absorbing things. Now, if she only would stop speaking harshly towards men, she’d be perfect, but I guess I just have to wait and look after her.
“You did great, Miyu.”
I ruffled Miyu’s hair and stroked it. When I did that, She closed her eyes and felt pleased with it.
However, the Byte editorial staff is really amazing, being unfazed by all this. At first, they looked at me as if they were a little surprised, but after some time, they were completely unfazed. That’s why Miyu doesn’t have to worry about them.
So, I went back to the screen and looked at Twitter. As it was the first day of Golden Week, there was a lot of news related to tourist attractions. Among them, “Skytree Crowded Situation” caught my eye.
“Hey, Miyu.”
“What is it, Ryu-kun?”
Miyu seemed to be taking a break as well.
“Why don’t we go to Skytree tomorrow?”
Tokyo Skytree is a radio tower in Tokyo. At the base of it, there is a huge commercial facility called Solamachi, which has an aquarium, restaurants, bookstores, drugstores, and many other stores. It is said that you can spend a whole day in Solamachi alone. I remembered that I asked her before if she wanted to climb the Skytree.
“Wait, is that a d-date!?”
Miyu asked me back with a blush. If I think about it, it takes a long time to get to Tokyo from Tsukunami City, so it’s not a place we can just casually go to for fun.
But when she asked me if it’s a date, I’m a little at a loss for words.
“You said you wanted to go there, right? I just remembered what you said.”
I wondered if that sounded a little bitter. But when I looked at her, Miyu looked a little disappointed.
“I see, okay. I want to see it, so let’s go!”
She gave me an OK reply.
“Alright. Well, it’s pretty crowded so we have to plan before going. I’ll make reservations for both of us.”
Once that was decided, I quickly booked the tickets.
“You’re very good at these kinds of things, Ryu-kun.”
“Miyu is very intuitive.”
For Miyu, going to the Skytree would be enough, but I wanted to make it more fun, so I made some plans.
