Saturday, July 4th. We got off at Akihabara station, where we decided to take care of the relationship between Shun-san, the editorial director of Byte, and Miyako, a friend from junior high. The weather was clear and sunny.
“It’s so hot, it already feels like summer…”(Miyu)
“It’s supposed to be cooler today.”(Ryuji)
“Could this be another effect of global warming?” (Miyu)
“I don’t think so…?”(Ryuji)
We talked about such unimportant things. If this was supposed to be on the cooler side then I’m depressed just thinking about how hot it’s going to get later on.
“Well, for now let’s go look for shade.”
“Yeah, I hope it will go away while we wait.”
So we decided to take shelter under the eaves of a nearby store while we waited for Miyako and Shun-san, our main targets.
“Hey, honestly, what do you think?”
“What do you mean…?”
Miyu looked as if she didn’t know what was asked.
“It’s about Shun-san and Miyako. Will it really work out? I’m sorry to say it, but Shun-san is quite a free spirited person, isn’t he?”
I’ve recently learned that Shun is not just an eccentric person, but also has a compassionate side, even so, he doesn’t seem to be the type to place much importance on rules. Miyako, on the other hand, is the type of person who wants everything to be regular; So I wonder if things would work out between the two of them.
“It’s just a hunch I have. As long as he dresses properly, everything will be fine.”
“Well, clothes are important, right?”
I told Shun again and again to wear something decent on the day of the meet up, but I wonder if he’ll be okay. I’m not sure if Miyako will like the idea of him wearing his usual saggy T-shirt and worn-out denims…
The rendezvous was at ten o’clock, but just in case, we had arrived at the Electric Town entrance thirty minutes earlier. All we had to do was wait for them to arrive. As I was lazing around, I suddenly felt a tap on my shoulder.
“Long time no see, Ryuji-kun, Miyu-chan!”
When I turned around, there was Miyako.
“It’s been a while since we’ve all seen each other in person.” (Miyako)
“Last time we met was Christmas Eve before the exam, right?” (Ryuji)
“Ah! That’s right! The three of us had a Christmas Eve party to relax~” (Miyu)
At that time, Miyu didn’t have many friends due to the incident, but she got together with a few of her friends from middle school, including Miyako, to celebrate Christmas Eve.
“Well, what do you guys think?” (Miyako)
“What do you mean?” (Ryuji)
“My clothes, are they weird?” (Miyako)
Miyako, who was unsure of herself, asked us what we thought. Today, Miyako was dressed in a white pleated skirt and light blue knit. It gave her a cool and refreshing look, and even to the people who don’t know anything about fashion, she looks stunning in it.
“I think it’s fine. In fact, I think you’re putting too much effort into it.” (Ryuji)
“It’s perfect!” (Miyu)
“I’m glad to hear that.” (Miyako)
Miyako was relieved when she heard that. Well, I wasn’t worried about Miyako, so that was fine, but the problem was Shun-san. He really doesn’t know anything about fashion, and I’m pretty sure Miyako would be weirded out if he came dressed in what he usually wears.
“I don’t really know if he can handle this…” (Ryuji)
“Let’s just trust in Shun-senpai, okay?” (Miyu)
Miyu, who said that, also looked a little uneasy. As I was thinking about that, I suddenly heard a voice behind me.
“Oh, you’re both early.” (Shun)
We turned around at the sound of his voice, and saw something we couldn’t believe.
On the bottom, a pair of black slacks that showed off his lithe physique. On top was a light green T-shirt. His hair was neatly cut. His slim and muscular build also reminded me of a runner.
When I think about it, Toshi-san used to cycle more than 42km each way without a care in the world, so it was only natural that he would look more toned if he wore proper clothes.
“Uhm… You’re Shun-senpai, right?” (Miyu)
Miyu was a bit skeptical when she asked the question.
“Yes, that’s right. Is it weird…?” (Shun)
“No, it’s not weird. In fact, I’m surprised at how well it turned out…” (Ryuji)
This was unexpected, as I had hoped that at the very least, he would be dressed in clean, non-stretchy clothes.
Shun-san then wondered why we were silent.
“Uhh… this person is Kawaguchi-san, right?” (Miyako)
“Y-Yeah, that’s right. This is Kawaguchi Shun, the head of our club.” (Ryuji)
“I’m Kawaguchi Shun. Well, I’m kind of an old man in the doctoral program, but nice to meet you.” (Shun)
“Y-Yeah, I’m Kujo Miyako. Umm… nice to meet you, too…” (Miyako)
Although it didn’t lead to a situation where she was taken aback, Miyako’s awkwardness was probably due to her shyness.
(Well… I thought you guys said that Kawaguchi-san was a bit sloppy about the clothes he wears?) [Miyako]
(We were surprised too. Honestly, we weren’t expecting that…) [Ryuji]
(His body is very well toned, he looks kinda cool!) [Miyu]
Apparently, our first impression of him was not only passable, but a pretty good start.
“Why don’t we go and head to a restaurant first? It’s really hot here…” (Ryuji)
“I agree.” (Miyako)
“Right?” (Miyu)
After that, we decided to move to Kenny’s, a family restaurant near the station. Fortunately, it wasn’t crowded and we were able to get to our seats right away.
“So, Kujo-san, was it? Err…” (Shun)
“No, younger than me, so please use my name.” (Miyako)
Maybe because of her upbringing, but Miyako’s really sensitive about hierarchy.
“Well then, Miyako-san, Is that alright?” (Shun)
“Yes, That’s alright.” (Miyako)
“I heard that you passed the entrance examination for the department of Science and Engineering at Waseda University. What did you do to get in?” (Shun)
Shun-san started asking questions like an interviewer. He’s suddenly very aggressive, this guy…! Come to think of it, the reason why he recruited us, the first time we met, was because Miyu showed her superb skills during our lecture.
“I-It’s nothing great, I just talked a little about what I’ve done so far…”
In addition to her shyness, Miyako was suddenly asked an unexpected question that completely confused her. So I thought of giving her a bit of help.
“Hey, lend me your ear for sec…” (Ryuji)
(Shun-san likes people with unusual skills and suchs, just answer him how you normally do and you’ll be fine.) [Ryuji]
(I-I see…) [Miyako]
After that, she regained her composure.
“It’s not much, really… I just used the Raspberry Pi to measure the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentration, and created a system that automatically turns on the air conditioning when the temperature exceeds the set temperature, and the humidifier when the humidity is low.” (Miyako)
She suddenly said something outrageous. Come to think of it, I never heard about the AO entrance exam in Tokyo.
Raspberry Pi is a commercially available small computer for educational purposes, and is used in combination with sensors such as thermometers and hygrometers (sold separately) to realize the Internet of Things (IoT). However, it should require more than a little bit of technology to link it with other home appliances, let alone to measure them.
“Hoo~ that’s really interesting.” (Shun)
I felt Shun’s eyes shine suspiciously.
“What’s your programming language, by the way?” (Shun)
“It’s safe to say, C++” (Miyako)
“Why did you choose C++ instead of Python for the Raspberry Pi?” (Shun)
“Python would have been easier, but I’m used to C++. It’s a little pathetic…” (Miyako)
“No it’s not, it’s great that you’re proficient in C++ at your age. How does it work with your appliances?” (Shun)
“I thought it would be difficult to use special hardware, so I used my smartphone as an HTTP server, sent requests from the Raspberry Pi, and controlled the appliances from the smartphone app!” (Miyako)
“Ohh~ you made the HTTP server yourself?” (Shun)
“I didn’t need full functionality, so I made it quickly.” (Miyako)
“You’re right, that’s probably the quickest way. How long is the delay from the sensor?” (Shun)
“As far as I can tell, the worst It can do is 100ms milliseconds.” (Miyako)
“Ohh~ I can’t believe it was made by a high school student. You really have something to show me, Miyako-san.” (Shun)
“It’s more amazing that you can understand what I just explained, Kawaguchi-san!” (Miyako)
I was dumbfounded by the way the conversation was going on at super high speed, without any particular questions being asked back. I was kinda surprised because back when we were in junior high, Miyako didn’t act like a technology geek at all…
(Now you know why I said they fit together, right?) [Miyu]
(Yeah, now I know what you mean alright…) [Ryuji]
The two of us whispered while Miyako and Shun-san were talking. This went on for half an hour.
“Kawaguchi-san, wait no, Kawaguchi-senpai! Can I call you master?” (Miyako)
“I’m not that great, but don’t hesitate to call me by my first name.” (Shun)
“Well then, Shun-senpai. Please treat me well!” (Miyako)
The two of them hit it off completely. After that, at some electronics stores, they were having advanced discussions that I couldn’t understand, and at a PC parts store, they were talking about the performance of some graphics cards (which I could understand) and other tech savvy conversations, to the point where I thought they didn’t need us.
Then we had lunch at a famous beef tongue chain restaurant in Akihabara. After that, Shun-san and Miyako were going to go their separate ways. Well, it looks like I don’t have to worry about them.
“Hmm~ The rice with grated yam here is delicious, isn’t it?” (Miyako)
Miyako happily said so while enjoying her beef tongue set meal.
“I don’t usually come here, but the barley rice and soup is good too.” (Miyako)
“Do you like eating here, Miyako?”(Ryuji)
“It’s a restaurant near the university campus. I only eat here when I want to splurge a little.” (Miyako)
“I remember there’s another one near Hayahoda. I’d like to compare the taste, quantity and price next time.” (Shun)
Shun said so, as expected of the one who proposed the beef bowl article.
“That’s great! I’ll show you around if you do so! Let’s see, when would you like to go…?” (Miyako)
I’ve never seen Miyako in high tension, and she wasn’t just saying, “Let’s go sometime,” she was looking at her book schedule, so I could tell that she was serious.
“N-No, it doesn’t have to be right now…” (Shun)
Even Shun-san, who made that comment, was also flustered.
As for me and Miyu…
(A-Anway, I’m glad it’s going to work out, huh?)[Miyu]
(T-That’s right! So let’s leave the rest up to them, okay?)[Ryuji]
We decided to leave the two of them alone.
Then, after lunch.
“Well then, I guess that’s it! Let’s meet again, okay?” (Miyu)
Said Miyu signalling that it’s time for us to say goodbye.
“Yes, thank you very much.” (Miyako)
“Oh man, she’s quite an interesting kid. I bet she’s going to turn into someone great…” (Shun)
Shun-san’s whispered remarks seemed off somehow, but I didn’t care.
After we said goodbye to each other, Miyu and I were left alone.
“S-So, it turned out as I expected, right?” (Miyu)
Miyu was puzzled by the fact that the two of them hit it off more than she expected.
“No it’s okay, you didn’t expect that this would happen, right? And what’s with their conversation? I’m not a hardware expert, so I couldn’t understand them at all.” (Ryuji)
“Because I heard that Miyako-chan has been doing some electronics work lately, so I thought they would be a good fit for each other…” (Miyu)
“I really wonder what happened to Miyako.” (Ryuji)
We both wondered. I could understand the rudiments of electronics, but that conversation was clearly that of people who were really used to it.
“When we were in junior high, Miyako couldn’t keep up with all the tech-savvy talk, right?” (Ryuji)
“Yeah, I remember that too… I wonder what happened to her?” (Miyu)
The two of us dawdled for a while.
“Since the two of them seem okay, do you want to go on a date with me?” (Ryuji)
“I would love to! Well, I’m sure those two will be fine if we just leave them alone.” (Miyu)
Actually, the original plan was to break up once and meet up in the evening, but with the way things were going, we decided to leave it as it was.
“So, looking at my clothes, do you have anything to say…?” (Miyu)
Miyu stared at me intently.
“Oh… I mean! it looks good on you! It really pairs up with your cheerful vibe!” (Ryuji)
Today Miyu was wearing yellow shorts on the bottom and a white shirt on top. I forgot to tell her what I thought because I was completely distracted by Shun-san and Miyako.
“Fufu, you don’t have to panic like that~” (Miyu)
I hurriedly told her what I thought, but she just laughed at it.
“Well then, let’s go~!” (Miyu)
I don’t know if she’s in a good mood because of the compliment or what, but Miyu walks off with her arms around mine.
(Well, it looks like I don’t have to worry about Shun-san and Miyako.) [Ryuji]
We’ll just enjoy our date.
The first place we stopped by was a game store. We wanted to check if any new games had been released recently.
“Ah! It’s Atsumori! Wanna play this together?”(Miyu)
Atsumare Bakemon no Mori (Atsumori) is a slow life game in which the player develops a deserted island overrun by monsters. I’m not sure what kind of slow life I’d expect from an island full of rotting corpses, bears, and zombies, but the game’s combination of slow life and survival elements has been a big hit, and the series boasts a lot of followers.
“Isn’t Atsumori a bit bleak? I don’t really want us to kill each other, you know?”(Ryuji)
In Atsumori, the player can invite other people to their island through the Internet, but they can even kill the invited player’s character and keep the property for themselves.
“As expected, I wouldn’t do that okay!?”(Miyu)
Miyu said so with a smile on her face, but I still haven’t forgotten how she killed my character in the past. If it’s a game with a player-kill element, Miyu is a type of player who would innocently kill the player.
“Alright, but no killing, okay? That’s a promise.”(Ryuji)
“Okay~!”(Miyu)
After that, we bought two copies of Atsumori. Wait, she will keep her promise, right?
Then after buying the games we wanted, we went to a Manga store. These days, I can buy almost anything in e-book format, but the advantage of going to a physical store is that I can see all the products on display.
“Ah! It’s Fisher x Fisher! I didn’t know they published a new chapter…”(Miyu)
“That author, you’ll never know when he’s going to take a break…”(Ryuji)
Fisher x Fisher is a shounen manga that begins with the main character setting out on a journey to take the exam to become a fisherman, and while it was interesting, the author takes frequent breaks from the series, and many fans have become unable to keep up. [TLN: hunter x hunter lmao]
“When was the last time you read it?”(Ryuji)
“I think it was five years ago…”(Miyu)
Those of us who couldn’t keep up didn’t bother to read the new chapters.
After that, we checked on the new publication shelves at several bookstores, but we couldn’t find anything new.
“Oh well, I’ll just get the e-book versions.”(Ryuji)
“I can just buy it later too~”(Miyu)
We don’t really care about the physical copy, as long as we can read then it’s okay.
We also browsed through the doujin store, figurines and other things we don’t usually buy, and before we knew it, the sun was about to set.
“Ahh~ that was fun! I’m looking forward to playing Atsumori!”(Miyu)
“Just play nice, okay?”(Ryuji)
As we were talking about this, I suddenly remembered about Miyako and Shun-san.
“Do you think Shun-san and Miyako are doing well?”(Ryuji)
I’m sure they’re fine but I’m curious about what happened to them.
“Ah, I just got a message from Miyako-chan.”
“What did she say?”(Miyu)
“She said she’s going to give Shun-san a tour of her university. She also said she’s going to a beef tongue restaurant.”(Ryuji)
I wondered what happened to her.
“That’s good, did she say anything else?”(Ryuji)
“She also said she’s going to make it happen.”(Miyu)
“I see, I’m sure she’ll figure it out.”(Ryuji)
At any rate, I was relieved to have accomplished my goal for the day. As I was thinking this, I suddenly heard from my side.
“Ryu-kun, I think we don’t have to go home for today…”(Miyu)
My heart nearly skipped a beat at her words. The tone of her voice was different from usual, it was really sly…
“D-Do you know what you are saying?”(Ryuji)
“I’m just being honest and Ryu-kun is more excited about this, right?”(Miyu)
She said with a happy look on her face, I don’t think I could beat Miyu when it comes to this. The moment I panicked, I already lost.
“Then, let’s look for a hotel to stay in…”(Ryuji)
“Ah! I found an interesting hotel while I was browsing through the internet. Do you want to go there?”(Miyu)
She showed me her phone. The hotel had a gorgeous Jacuzzi and a luxurious interior.
“Let’s go there, then.”(Ryuji)
I was not that particular about which hotel to choose, so I said yes. Miyu was also very proactive about such things, or is it just that I’m too much of a herbivore?
(Oh well…)
It’s not that bad being Miyu’s bottom. That’s what I thought.
