■April 16th, Monday
One day, about ten days after the entrance ceremony.
The sound of typing on a computer keyboard echoed in the room.
This was the Computer Lab in the Department of Programming and Computer Science at Tsukuha University.
The room was lined up with computers shared by undergraduates that were often used for practical training.
At the moment, we are in the middle of a compulsory lecture called “Computer Practice” in the Department of Computer Science.
It’s a lecture to teach basic operations to people who are not used to computers.
This time, we’re learning how to use Excel, a very famous spreadsheet software.
But for me, it’s super boring.
I already knew how to use spreadsheets before I entered the university.
There’s no need for me to learn it now.
So, I was just scrolling through Twitter after I was done with my task.
Suddenly, I peek at the monitor next to me. It was my childhood friend, Miyu.
Unlike in high school, the seating arrangement for this class lecture is free, but Miyu always sits next to me.
Apparently, Miyu’s also finished with her task as well.
But that’s okay.
A pixelated picture of a famous uncle plumber eating a mushroom was displayed on her monitor.
[Miyu, what are you doing?]
I sent her a message on Line.
[I’m drawing on a spreadsheet.]
The reply came back quickly. She was smiling, but I wondered what she was smiling at.
[I have no idea what you’re talking about.]
[“Drawing with Excel”, I tried imitating it because it was a hot topic.]
I’m pretty sure I saw an article about that.
The cells of Excel, a spreadsheet software, can be colored.
The idea was to make each cell a certain color and draw a pixelated picture with it.
However, there are not many people who can do such a thing quickly.
“Asakura-san, Do you have a moment?”
A fellow student called out to Miyu.
He’s Yasui-kun, I think?
He’s the type of guy who wants to look good for the girls in his department.
To be honest, I don’t have a very good impression of him.
“What do you want from me?”
Suddenly, Miyu’s voice turned cold and her words became aggressive.
“Do you want me to help you with your lab work?”
Apparently, he thought that Miyu was having a hard time on her Excel task. But you’re way off, though.
“I know that much.”
Miyu’s voice was filled with irritation. Oh, this is a bad one, I thought.
“I know it’s not easy to tell someone you’re stuck, but…”
Yasui-kun, you’re not very good at reading the mood.
I guess that’s enough, I muttered in my mind.
“As I said, I know that much. Yasui-kun, was it?”
Miyu’s atmosphere became more and more dark.
“Yes, so you remembered my name.”
Yasui-kun’s face showed an expression of relief. But, you shouldn’t be relieved about that.
“It’s obvious that you have an ulterior motive to get close to me in the pretext of teaching me.”
Miyu verbally stabbed Yasui.
“And can’t you see from my screen that I’m done with my task?”
Miyu pursued further, she was relentless, and to top it off.
“I don’t mind if you have ulterior motives, but you should be careful who you choose.”
Miyu cuts him off with a sharp, icy voice. After that, silence reigned in the area.
“I’m sorry, for showing up with an ulterior motive…”
Yasui-kun, who’s half crying, withdraws. He’s being weird and insistent.
He was also looking at her in a lecherous manner, so he deserved it.
However, after Miyu fought off Yasui, she turned toward me with a tearful look on her face.
That being said, Miyu had a traumatic experience.
◇◇◇◇
After the afternoon lecture, we went back to our apartment together.
Miyu barges into my room as if it were her own. But, I think It’s fine since we’re next door to each other.
“Haa… I did it again, Ryu-kun.”
She started to whine while using my lap as a pillow.
I wondered how many times my lap had become Miyu’s pillow.
One of Miyu’s biggest flaws is that when it comes to men, she suddenly treats them harshly.
If it’s a persistent guy, or even a normal guy, she overreacts.
“Well, he was being pushy, wasn’t he?”
So, I don’t think she needs to worry about it this time.
“But I didn’t have to say those words to him that much…”
Miyu said with a shaky voice. My heart hurts at the sound of her voice.
“Well, we could have made him leave in a more peaceful manner, there wouldn’t have been anything to say.”
I said this while stroking her hair.
The fluffy natural hair is very comfortable to stroke.
I want to keep stroking it forever. She’s so adorable.
“If only I could fix this…”
Miyu said while puffing her cheeks.
If she could fix it, she would. It’s always been that way with her.
“Really, you’re so cute.”
I pinched her squishy cheeks.
“Mou~ Don’t pinch my cheeks.”
And then she pulled my fingers off. Too bad…
“And don’t be so quick to tell the other girls, okay?”
Miyu said, looking annoyed.
“Tell what?”
“That they are cute or something!”
“How can I say that? I mean, there aren’t even ten girls in our department”
The Faculty of Computer Science is a man’s garden. The ratio of men to women is an astonishing 9:1.
That’s why the girls are being targeted by the boys in the same department.
“Ryu, you’re very popular”
We’ve been together all through elementary, middle and high school, so I don’t know what she’s talking about.
“I’ve never even had anyone confess their feelings to me.”
It’s true, I’ve never had a girl confess their feelings to me, and yet, Miyu seemed like she wanted to say something.
“What’s wrong?”
I haven’t spent a long time with her for nothing.
I know that she wants to say something. But, I’m not sure what she means.
“…It’s nothing.”
Then she turned her head away. I gave up chasing it, thinking that there was no need to force myself to ask.
We are not in a relationship, even though we act like this.
Of course, Miyu is cute, beautiful, and very attractive as a woman.
I look at her and sometimes I even get nervous. Still, we are not dating.
“Soo~ soo~”
Eventually, I can hear Miyu sleeping. Her sleeping face is so innocent that it makes her look even younger. However, she’s really defenseless, even though she’s with a guy.
‘There will be a day when she will have a relationship with a man.’ (TLN: And that’s YOU dumbass)
If she can make a face like the one she’s showing me, I’m sure any boy would fall in love with her.
Maybe I’m a bit biased because she is my childhood friend.
‘If only that guy hadn’t done that in high school…’
I know it’s over now, but I can’t help but feel resentful.
