After safely completing the reception, I exhaled and faced Saito.

Perhaps because she wasn’t overly distracted by the cat, Saito held my hand without any reserves and jerked me into the room. We entered the room while I felt a little nervous because of her aggressiveness. 

[Waaah! There’s so many, Tanaka-kun! What should we do? Which child should I approach first?] (TN: out of context this sounds so wrong in so many levels)

As soon as she entered the room, she gazed happily at the cats. Her sparkling eyes were innocent and adorable. Her atmosphere felt appropriate for her age and my mouth dropped.

[There’s still plenty of time, so let’s start with the nearest cat over here]

[Ahh, that works]

Saito nodded her head in agreement when I pointed to the cat sleeping in the cat tower in front of her.

I approached the cat slowly so as to not startle it. As I got closer, the cat, which had been sleeping, opened its eyes and looked at me, perhaps sensing my presence.

[Neko-chan. Are you awake?]

When her eyes met the almond-colored round eyes, Saito whispered in a higher than usual endearing voice. As if to answer her, the cat meowed.

[Tanaka-kun, Tanaka-kun! The cat answered me! It answered with a meow!]

She didn’t expect it to squeal back at her, so she turned to me and happily pulled my sleeve to let me know. Saito was excited, and I could see a slight blush on her cheeks. 

[Well, good for you. Maybe if you spoke in meows we could have more conversations]

[N-No, I wouldn’t do that. I would never. I know what Tanaka-kun is thinking]

I suggested that I wanted to see that time when she was talking to a cat with [Nyaa Nyaa] again. Saito blushed deep red and her voice rose in a panic. She refused quickly and turned away. (TN: Damn no Nyaa Nyaa Saito)

[Are you sure? Maybe you can get them to answer one more time?]

Saito’s cat imitation was very cute, and I wanted to see it again. When I pointed that out, her gaze began to wander around in a way that was easy to understand.

[Y-you really think so….? If I imitate a cat, would they answer?]

She looked up to me as if she was expecting an answer. Her thin voice had a somewhat expectant tone.

[I don’t know, but it’s worth a shot]

[…Alright, I’ll do it] (TN: nevermind, I spoke too soon)

I don’t think the cat could understand her, but I wanted to see Saito desperately imitating the cat, so I encouraged her to try.

[Nyaa, Nyaaa~] 

She glanced at me for a moment while imitating a purr. But soon she faced the cat again.

She continued to talk to the cat, her voice slightly high, and shyly imitating the meow several times.

The cat continued to curiously paw at Saito’s imitation of its meow. After staring at each other for a while, the cat said [Nyaa], perhaps responding to Saito’s voice.

At that moment, Saito’s face began to glow. Her mouth relaxed and she smugly turned to me. 

[Did you see that, Tanaka-kun!? The cat answered me!]

[Yeah, I did. Why don’t you do it more?]

[Yes, I’ll try]

Once she started, she began having fun, no longer shy, she made several attempts to communicate with the cat, making more [Nyaa, nyaa, nyaa] sounds.

Saito’s expression as she gazed happily at the cat was cute and somewhat endearing, making me feel as if I wanted to protect her.
