Chapter 1: “The School Idol Asked Me to be Her Boyfriend”
Translator: AJ1703
“Hey, Kakeru, will you be my boyfriend?”
Three months after entering high school, I was summoned to the rooftop by Arisugawa Mirei, the school’s idol, who said such an outrageous thing to me.
Her long, fluffy, peach-colored hair is so beautiful that it unintentionally attracts the eye.
Her eyes are so large and clear that you would think you were being sucked into them, and her nose is so straight that you would think she was from abroad.
Her lips are also exquisitely shaped, neither too thin nor too thick, so I think she is definitely classified as a beautiful girl.
Above all, the friendly smile she is wearing is likely to captivate anyone, young or old, male or female.
To be honest, it is no wonder that she is so popular that she is called the school’s idol.
In response to that remark from the school idol that could be taken as a confession of love, I― Kagurazaka Kakeru, scratched my cheeks with my finger and tilted my head.
“Even if it’s a joke, isn’t this too harsh…?”
“I’m serious, though? Kakeru is the only person I can rely on, and I know I can count on you.”
If you consider the number of years Mirei and I have known each other since we met, we have been friends for quite a long time.
After all― she and I are cousins of the same age.
And for some reason, we share the same birthday.
Mirei used to think of me as special― but we drifted apart when we were in elementary school.
That’s because her father and my grandfather had a big fight that resulted in their separation.
Originally, I was in Okayama Prefecture and Mirei had lived in Tokyo for a long time, so she used to go back home with her parents on major holidays.
So we used to meet at my grandfather’s house, but we never saw each other anymore because she no longer went back home.
And then we met again― about a week before the entrance ceremony.
In other words, it had only been a little over three months since we met again.
So, I was at a loss for what to do if I was asked to be her boyfriend.
“If you want a boyfriend, I think there are a lot of candidates for the job though…?”
In the past three months ever since she entered the school, I have heard rumors of Mirei being called up for confessions as much as I hate to hear them.
The fact that she has become the school’s idol in just three months must have something to do with the fact that she is so popular.
“That’s why I’m relying on Kakeru, you know? If you become my boyfriend, I won’t be called out for confessions anymore.”
…Hmm?
“Does that mean you want me to be your boyfriend to get rid of guys?”
“Yes, yes!”
Mirei shook her head hard in response to my question.
…I lost my temper.
“Mirei… you have to be precise with your words… You basically want me to play the boyfriend role, not become your real boyfriend?”
“………….”
Mirei silently thinks with a difficult expression.
But then― she smiles.
“Well if it’s Kakeru, I don’t mind you become my real boyfriend though?”
“―!”
I was caught off guard when I let my guard down, so I gasped.
Mirei is a natural, so I can’t tell if she is joking or being serious.
“I don’t know much about relationships, and I’d be happy to have Kakeru teach me, okay?”
Apparently, she is being serious, or is at least honest about it.
I think this naive idol is a very dangerous person.
“Playing the role of being your boyfriend― I understand that, but I can’t be your real boyfriend.”
“…Is it because we’re cousins?”
“No.”
Even if a certain couple were cousins, they are legally allowed to marry, and if they like each other, I don’t care.
But no matter how popular Mirei is, I don’t have any romantic feelings for her, so I have no intention of going out with her.
To begin with, it is impossible for me to be serious about a relationship with Mirei when she herself says she doesn’t know what love is.
Besides, I have―.
“Fuh~n? If you’re going to refuse that much, could it be because of that girl?”
Mirei seems to have misunderstood the reason for my refusal, perhaps because she is serious about going out with someone to learn about love.
And it’s hard to say, because that misunderstanding is exactly what I’m getting at the root of.
In a way, she’s right…
“Please don’t pry into my affairs in any strange way.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make Kakeru feel uncomfortable by asking. It’s just…”
“You don’t have to say it, I know what you meant.”
It’s been said by others many times already.
I don’t want to hear it now.
“I see. So, back to the subject, can I assume that you’re okay with playing the role of my boyfriend?”
Mirei switches and smiles as if nothing had happened.
To be honest, I envied her speed of changeover.
“Okay no matter what, maybe if we don’t go out like this, the rumor at school will be that I dumped Mirei…”
“And if that happens, maybe lots of boys will come to take advantage of my heartbreak?”
Mirei tilts her head happily with a smile on her face.
She should be in trouble for getting confessions from boys, but this smile― I guess she knows how I’m going to respond.
In the first place, why would the whole school start a rumor that I dumped Mirei if I didn’t go out with her here― it’s because Mirei called me to the rooftop in front of my classmates in a meaningful manner. The class was really in an uproar at that time.
Fortunately, Mirei and I were in the same class, so she didn’t ask me openly, but if Mirei had been in a different class, I might have been confronted by my classmates.
“You called me out in class to corner me, didn’t you? If it’s just about playing the role of boyfriend, why did you go through all the trouble if you could’ve just asked me at home?”
After all, Mirei has been living in my house for a little over three months now.
There is no need to go all the way outside to talk to me.
I guess that’s why she did what she did to block my escape route.
However, Mirei is not the type of person who can pull off a scheme like this.
Probably, the one who made the suggestion was―
“Well, I just did what Mana-chan told me to do.”
I knew it, it was Mana― my little sister, huh…

Translator’s Afterword:
I’ll tell you all in advance, this series only has like 29 chapters, so I’ll try to upload this daily as much as possible. Surely since it’s short, it won’t go deranged into being a football star player all of a sudden or being a stock god market high school kid right? (Average Nekokuro moment).
Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy this series (I haven’t read ahead btw, whatever the latest chapters you guys see is also the latest one that I know of).
On a side note, if anyone has spare money that could help me with my medications and vitamins (I was almost bedridden for 2 months because of it), please do consider giving me a hand through my ko-fi! Any amount would do, and is very much appreciated, thanks!
