The restaurant wouldn’t care about who pays for what as long as they received the money. To prove this, the waiter was watching us from a distance without trying to interfere.

Dad was about to pull his card out of his wallet.
“I’ll pay for her, dad. You just pay for ours.”
I grabbed his wrist.

“Mom gave me enough money for it, so I can pay for her. Besides, I don’t need money at the moment, she can pay me back later… You’re fine with this right, Nitta-san?”

I have always loved my dad. I wanted to be like him, he was my role model.
But today, he looked more pathetic than any adult I had ever seen in my entire life.
I don’t want to be like him anymore.

I think not. I think he’s being lenient. His dad is being shady. Popping in and out of their lives at a whim. Now he’s being vague to his son. His son deserves to know what’s going on. To hear that the father you looked up to, divorced your mom and almost immediately started dating another woman. And he can’t even say whether or not he truly loves her? I’d be pissed! I don’t think he “resented” his father just because he divorced Maki’s mom. Maki likes his father for being decisive and sure, but instead of taking that attitude, he was unsure of things. I believe that if he had acted as “he normally would”, Maki wouldn’t be so pissed. That’s a situation in which he was expecting to see his father’s usual attitude instead of him being a wimp, after all, it’s about their family.
Although I can’t deny the divorce and seeing how his mother was acting is also a factor.
I still think that resenting him is a little too much, but I guess it makes sense for someone of his age.

Honestly I’m conflicted. On one hand the Father might have felt lonely since he doesn’t have anyone close to him. His son is living with his ex wife and the only immediate support he had was his subordinate. Plus he didn’t really cheat only after officially got divorced and a few months after that. Also don’t really blame Maki he’s a kid this looks wrong from his perspective when you want a complete family and had been closely observing his mothers struggles. It’s def not black or white. Very gray area. I lean more toward being angry at the dad. Like they divorced just to date again, which isn’t illegal but it feels bad. His usually decisive dad is acting wishy-washy about this new woman. If he dated her to not feel lonely after the divorce then I’d be pissed at him too.
